Royals, Ratings, and Renewals: Harry and Meghan Eye Record Netflix Deal Amid Mixed Reception

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are poised to re-enter the streaming spotlight with what could become one of the most lucrative entertainment deals in royal history. Nearly five years after signing their headline-making partnership with Netflix—initially reported at £75 million—the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are now reportedly on the verge of negotiating a fresh contract, one that could eclipse the original in both financial scale and creative control.

Despite early speculation that their initial deal was inflated in public perception, the couple’s continued value to Netflix appears undiminished. According to veteran entertainment journalist Alison Boshoff, writing for the Daily Mail, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos remains an enthusiastic supporter of the Sussexes, particularly Meghan Markle. Insiders now suggest the couple is in discussions for a “first look” agreement that could rival the landmark $65 million pact Netflix inked with Barack and Michelle Obama.

If finalised, the new deal would signal Netflix’s enduring confidence in the marketability and content potential of the Sussex brand—even amid fluctuating viewership numbers and a politically polarising public image. Crucially, the deal is expected to include the green-lighting of a third season of With Love, Meghan, the Duchess’s lifestyle series. The first season premiered in March to lacklustre ratings and mixed reviews, and the second—already filmed—will be released this autumn.

Yet sources close to the couple say Meghan remains undeterred. There are also rumblings of additional series tied to seasonal celebrations such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, with Meghan positioned as host in a format reportedly blending domestic warmth with aspirational living. If confirmed, these projects would continue the Sussexes’ pivot from documentary-style exposés to brand-driven lifestyle content with broader appeal.

Netflix, for its part, has not commented officially, but industry chatter points to a September announcement. If accurate, it would coincide with the launch of With Love, Meghan’s second season, providing an opportune marketing moment to reset public perception and reaffirm Netflix’s bet on the couple’s potential.

Meanwhile, royal watchers are abuzz over another, quieter trend involving the monarchy’s cultural influence: baby names. The Office for National Statistics has released its annual report on the most popular names of 2024, and while classic royal monikers such as William, George, and Elizabeth continue to carry historical weight, they haven’t dominated this year’s top spots. Instead, a lesser-known female royal name has emerged at number four—a surprising development in an age where the naming of royal offspring often evokes both tradition and symbolism.

This revelation underscores a broader point: the Royal Family’s influence on public sentiment is as diffuse as it is enduring. From naming conventions to lifestyle trends, from fashion statements to Netflix content strategy, the House of Windsor continues to project soft power in subtle and occasionally unexpected ways.

Still, the Sussexes remain among the most polarising figures within that sphere. Their decision to step back from frontline royal duties in 2020 and relocate to the United States has recast them as cultural entrepreneurs navigating the borderlands between monarchy and media, tradition and reinvention. For some, they represent a progressive reinvention of royal relevance; for others, a departure too far from duty and decorum.

Whatever one’s perspective, the financial implications are unambiguous. Should the reported Netflix deal come to fruition, Harry and Meghan stand to earn more in 2026 than at any previous point in their post-royal careers. And in doing so, they would cement their status not only as controversial royal figures, but also as formidable players in the global content economy.

As public opinion remains divided, the streaming world watches closely. Whether this next chapter proves redemptive, revolutionary, or merely lucrative, one thing is certain: Harry and Meghan are far from fading into quiet Californian obscurity. Their story—on-screen and off—continues to captivate.
