Liverpool endured a night to forget at Brentford, falling 3-2 and suffering their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat. Despite the close scoreline, Brentford dominated the match from start to finish, exposing weaknesses in Liverpool’s defence that have been persistent throughout the season. The Reds looked vulnerable at every turn, struggling to cope with long balls, set-pieces, and swift counter-attacks, leaving their fans frustrated as they left the stadium on a chilly west London evening.
The defeat marks a worrying milestone for Liverpool, equalling the number of losses in the early stages of the season that would normally have been expected over an entire title campaign. Only a handful of reigning champions, including Leicester City in 2016-17, Liverpool themselves in 2020-21, and Manchester City last season, have suffered four consecutive league defeats. This also represents the first time the team has lost four successive league games since February 2021, highlighting an urgent need for intervention from manager Arne Slot.
Brentford opened the scoring after just five minutes, with Michael Kayode’s long throw creating chaos in Liverpool’s defence. Dango Ouatarra capitalized on Kristoffer Ajer’s flick to give the Bees the lead. From that moment, Liverpool struggled to regain composure. Brentford’s relentless pressing and sharp attacking play consistently unsettled the visitors, with Mikkel Damsgaard delivering a perfectly timed through-ball for Kevin Schade’s second goal, doubling the advantage before halftime.
Liverpool managed to pull one back through Milos Kerkez’s goal just before the break, offering a glimmer of hope, but the respite was short-lived. A controversial penalty decision allowed Igor Thiago to restore Brentford’s two-goal cushion early in the second half. Mohamed Salah’s late strike reduced the deficit to 3-2, but it proved insufficient to prevent a fourth successive loss.
Manager Arne Slot faced a challenging night on multiple fronts. His midfield failed to assert control, and new signing Florian Wirtz, who had impressed in the Champions League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, struggled to make an impact. Wirtz missed a key first-half opportunity and was later substituted, leaving Liverpool’s attacking options limited. Hugo Ekitike, another summer addition, received minimal service in the absence of injured players Alexander Isak and Ryan Gravenberch, further hampering the Reds’ attacking threat.
Defensively, Liverpool were porous. Virgil van Dijk’s partnership with £40m signing Milos Kerkez appeared uneasy, with the pair visibly uncertain at critical moments. Van Dijk was at fault for conceding the penalty that effectively sealed the match, highlighting a continuing issue at the heart of Liverpool’s defence. Overall, the team has conceded 14 goals in nine league games this season—a stark contrast to the previous campaign, when they did not concede their 14th goal until the 16th game.
Slot acknowledged the severity of the defeat in post-match interviews, stating, “It was a disappointing result and a disappointing performance as well. Conceding three goals is far too much if you want to win a game of football. First one was a set-piece, second is a counter-attack, which is one of the things Brentford are really good at. What I have to do is look at what we do wrong and what we do right. I have a clear idea of where we have to improve, but that hasn’t been the case in other games. We didn’t do the basics right.”
Looking ahead, Liverpool face a demanding run of fixtures. They host Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup last 16, followed by a Premier League clash against Aston Villa. Real Madrid then visit Anfield in the Champions League, before a crucial away trip to Manchester City, where they will face a ruthless attacking team. With a squad that includes high-profile signings yet lacks cohesion, the Reds must quickly find solutions to stop the slide.
The defeat underlines the urgency for Liverpool to address their defensive frailties, integrate new players effectively, and restore confidence across the squad. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as Slot navigates a challenging period, seeking to arrest what has become a worrying blip in Liverpool’s otherwise successful run.
Despite individual flashes of quality, including Salah’s late effort, the overall display highlighted systemic issues. Liverpool’s struggles with shape, consistency, and defensive organization must be resolved swiftly if they are to compete with top sides like Arsenal and Manchester City this season. For now, the Reds are left to reflect on a chastening night at Brentford and prepare for the difficult fixtures ahead.
