As the new Premier League season approaches, a supercomputer analysis by Opta has offered a detailed forecast, casting Liverpool as favorites to retain their crown while signaling a challenging campaign ahead for Manchester United.
According to the algorithm, Liverpool have a 28.5% chance of securing back-to-back titles for the first time in their history. The Reds dominated last season and now aim to sustain their winning momentum, with Arsenal emerging as their closest challengers.
Manchester City, under Pep Guardiola, are also in the mix, though the forecast suggests the Catalan’s side may go two years without an English top-flight title, holding an 18.8% likelihood of success.
For Manchester United, hopes of a resurgence after a pre-season under Ruben Amorim and over £200 million in new signings, including Benjamin Sesko, appear modest. The supercomputer predicts a mid-table finish, placing the Red Devils 12th in the standings.
At the bottom, Sunderland, Leeds, and Burnley are tipped to struggle and potentially face relegation, continuing the trend of newly promoted clubs dropping straight back down. Wolves, while expected to struggle, are projected to finish 17th, narrowly avoiding the drop.
Chelsea are forecasted to round out the top four, although their chances of claiming the title are low at just 8.4%. Tottenham Hotspur, amid a rebuild under Thomas Frank, are predicted to finish 14th, reflecting the challenges of last season, while Brentford is expected to secure 10th place despite losing key players.
Other clubs face mixed prospects. Nottingham Forest, last season’s surprise package, may finish in the bottom half, while Crystal Palace could see a positive outcome, finishing seventh, potentially securing European football under Oliver Glasner. Aston Villa and Newcastle are tipped for fifth and sixth, respectively, positioning themselves for European qualification.
Arsenal, despite consistent contention, are projected to finish second for the fourth consecutive season, with a 24.3% chance of winning the title, while Manchester City remain in third, according to Opta’s supercomputer predictions.
