A violent NSW police shooting unfolded today when a man armed with a knife and a chainsaw was shot dead by officers after stabbing a woman in a brutal home invasion along the New South Wales mid‑north coast. The shocking NSW police shooting at Tuncurry began just before 6.40am when emergency calls reported a man smashing into a home with both a chainsaw and a large knife, leaving a woman with serious injuries on Heath Avenue. Officers from the Manning Great Lakes district raced to the scene and found the 28‑year‑old woman suffering large wounds, who was then treated by paramedics and flown to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition, authorities confirmed.

The man fled the address in a white 4WD, triggering a pursuit that took officers across local streets and through a nearby sports ground before the vehicle crashed on the Forster Bridge. Law enforcement sources later said the suspect carjacked another vehicle at a nearby location, which he then used to ram a police car and injure an officer with minor wounds amid the chaotic chase.

Despite sustained efforts to bring the situation under control, the dangerous sequence continued with the suspect driving onto private property in Rainbow Flat, where he entered another home still carrying the knife, critically aggravating the confrontation with police. Officers on the ground attempted to subdue him with a Taser on multiple occasions, but he repeatedly resisted and eventually ran toward an officer wielding the knife, authorities stated, forcing the lethal final confrontation in which the man was fatally shot.

Investigators confirmed that police rendered first aid immediately after the shooting and then awaited arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics, but the man could not be revived and died at the scene. At this stage, his identity has not been formally released, but police believe he was 41.

This serious and fatal encounter has prompted a critical incident investigation under the oversight of the New South Wales Police’s Homicide Squad, supported by the Professional Standards Command and monitored by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, as required when police action results in death or serious injury. The probe aims to clarify every detail of the NSW police shooting, including the sequence of events leading to officers discharging their weapons.

Local residents were shaken by the unfolding events, as the early morning hours brought turmoil to a usually quiet street. Witnesses described the frantic activities of emergency crews and heavily armed officers converging on the scene, attempting to manage the rapidly escalating threat to public safety. Police have appealed for dashcam or CCTV footage from nearby properties that may have captured parts of the pursuit and interactions prior to the shooting, to support their inquiry into the incident.

Assistant Commissioner David Waddell, speaking to reporters, reiterated that officers exercised all reasonable attempts to detain the armed man using non‑lethal methods before the situation escalated to deadly force. Waddell emphasised that the decision to fire was made only when the man charged at an officer with a sharp weapon, presenting an immediate threat to life and limb. The assistant commissioner underscored that the forthcoming investigation will assess every aspect of the response and the actions taken by all involved.

The woman attacked in the initial home invasion remains in hospital with serious but stable injuries, and her family has requested privacy while she receives ongoing medical care and support. The broader community has expressed deep concern over the violent intrusions and the tragic loss of life, intensifying conversations around public safety and police responses in extreme circumstance.

As this critical incident investigation continues, residents and observers await more clarity on the motives and background of the events that led to the fatal NSW police shooting and stabbing earlier today. Authorities have stressed that while the probe is ongoing, there is no further threat to the public related to this incident, and they continue to encourage anyone with relevant material to come forward.
