Access to the stunning Pedn Vounder beach in Cornwall, widely celebrated for its turquoise waters and rugged scenery, has been temporarily closed by the National Trust due to safety concerns, leaving locals and tourists disappointed. The secluded cove, which has gained popularity as an unofficial nudist spot and featured as Nampara Cove in the BBC drama Poldark, would normally be buzzing with visitors during the summer heatwave.
The National Trust, which owns the cliff access path leading to the beach but not the beach itself, has roped off the route and placed warning signs reading “Danger. No access.” The charity explained that the path has suffered erosion, creating steep drops and culminating in a near-vertical six-metre descent to the beach. Officials also noted that rip currents in the surrounding waters have contributed to regular emergency incidents.
The closure has sparked concern among residents of the nearby village of Treen, who highlighted the beach’s rising popularity in recent years. Pedn Vounder has been recognized among the world’s most beautiful beaches by travel platforms such as EnjoyTravel.com and frequently promoted by influencers, further increasing visitor numbers.
Rebecca Ley, 46, who grew up near the beach, described the closure as “a real shame.” She noted that while access has always been slightly challenging, families and other visitors have managed the climb safely for years. Ley expressed concern over the potential impact on the village campsite and cafe, which benefit from the influx of tourists.
The National Trust emphasized that the closure was a necessary precaution. A spokesperson told The Independent: “Due to increasing coastal erosion, an unofficial and steep pathway across National Trust land leading to Pedn Vounder beach has become increasingly unsafe and is now temporarily closed. This decision has been made due to the significant increase in potential for serious injury and in consultation with local authorities, emergency services, and other partners. We understand this closure may disappoint visitors and the local community and have not taken the decision lightly.”
Visitors are being encouraged to explore alternative nearby locations such as Porthcurno beach while the temporary closure remains in place. The National Trust reiterated its commitment to maintaining access to nature and culture wherever safely possible, acknowledging the delicate balance between preserving public enjoyment and ensuring visitor safety.
