YEOVIL, UK – Toolstream, a major player in the British DIY and hardware sector, has officially entered administration, resulting in the immediate redundancy of more than 100 employees. Staff at the Somerset-based firm were reportedly told to “stay at home” following a final meeting late last week, as the company struggled to overcome a crippling inventory crisis.
The directors of Toolstream and its parent entity, Group Silverline Limited, have appointed Hywel Phillips and Gavin Park of Teneo Financial Advisory as joint administrators. In an official statement, the administrators cited “challenging trading conditions” stemming from the lingering effects of the COVID-19 global supply chain crisis. Crucially, a limited availability of stock left the retailer unable to maintain its operations, forcing a total of 111 redundancies.
“Our priority is providing support to all those made redundant,” said Hywel Phillips. “We appreciate that this is a very difficult and uncertain time for all involved.
Before its collapse, Toolstream was a powerhouse in the industry, supplying over 6,000 branded products—including hand tools, power tools, and workwear—to wholesalers and merchants across the UK and Europe. The company managed prominent brands such as Silverline, Triton, and Scruffs. Despite the current crisis, the firm’s most recent accounts, dated July 31, 2023, showed substantial profits of £57.7 million, highlighting the speed at which supply chain issues and market shifts have impacted the business.
As administrators begin the process of winding down operations and managing the freehold property owned by Group Silverline, the focus remains on the displaced workforce facing an uncertain holiday season.
