Investigators searching for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the elderly mother of US television host Savannah Guthrie, have revealed a frustrating setback after key DNA evidence failed to identify a suspect. DNA extracted from a glove found near Guthrie’s Tucson, Arizona home did not match any records in the FBI’s national DNA database, CODIS, authorities said on Tuesday.
The glove was discovered in a field about two miles from Guthrie’s residence and was considered a potential link to the masked figure seen in doorbell camera footage shortly before she disappeared on January 31. That footage shows a man wearing similar gloves attempting to disable the camera in the early hours of the morning, leading police to believe the individual may be involved in her abduction.
Sheriff Chris Nanos of the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed investigators have submitted the glove’s DNA profile to CODIS, but it did not produce a match with any profiles in the system — which includes DNA from known suspects and convicted individuals. At least one other DNA sample found at the property is still being analysed as part of the ongoing investigation.
The failure to find a match in the database means authorities have not yet linked the evidence to a known individual, leaving the case without a clear suspect despite extensive forensic efforts. The search has drawn intense public attention, with law enforcement urging anyone with information to come forward.
Guthrie, who was last seen returning home from a family gathering, has not been heard from since the night of her disappearance. Her family has been publicly ruled out as suspects by police, with the sheriff’s office describing them as “victims” and emphasising their cooperation with investigators.
Despite the setback with the glove DNA, investigators have said the investigation is far from over. Officials are exploring additional avenues, including genetic genealogy databases and analysis of other forensic evidence, in hopes of identifying the individual captured on surveillance and progressing the case.
