India and Canada have taken a significant step toward revitalising bilateral relations with the signing of a landmark nuclear energy cooperation agreement, marking a reset in ties that had been strained in recent years. The centrepiece of the renewed partnership is a long‑term uranium supply deal valued at approximately $2.6 billion Canadian dollars, under which Canada’s Cameco Corporation will provide nearly 22 million pounds of uranium ore concentrate to India over a nine‑year period beginning in 2027. This pact is designed to support India’s expanding fleet of nuclear reactors and underpin its long‑term energy plans, including ambitious goals for increasing nuclear generation capacity.
The uranium agreement was formalised during talks in Delhi between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney, who also announced progress toward broader economic cooperation. Both leaders said they intend to fast‑track negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with a shared goal of expanding bilateral trade to around $50 billion by 2030.
In addition to nuclear cooperation, India and Canada signed memorandums of understanding covering critical minerals, renewable energy collaboration, technology and innovation, and educational and cultural exchanges. The nuclear deal reinforces Canada’s role as a reliable supplier of critical energy resources while helping India meet its clean energy and fuel security objectives as demand for electricity grows rapidly.
Diplomats and analysts view the arrangement as a decisive diplomatic reset, coming after tensions in bilateral ties over issues including prior disagreements and trade stagnation. The partnership underscores shared democratic values and mutual strategic interests in energy, technology and economic growth. Both governments described the agreements as laying the foundation for deeper cooperation across multiple sectors beyond energy alone.
