Friends and family of Mohammed Yousef Algasim, a 20‑year‑old Saudi student fatally stabbed in Cambridge last year, have paid moving tribute to his character, describing him as “the most special person” and a deeply compassionate young man whose loss continues to reverberate. The remarks came as a jury at Cambridge Crown Court found Chas Corrigan guilty of murder following the fatal attack.
Algasim had come to the UK on a 10‑week placement to study English when he was attacked outside student accommodation near the city’s train station in August 2025. Prosecutors described the stabbing as “unprovoked and senseless”, and CCTV footage presented at trial showed Corrigan approaching Algasim before returning and inflicting a single fatal stab wound to his neck.
In statements released after the verdict, Algasim’s family characterised him as a generous and gentle spirit whose presence uplifted those around him. They said he was “cheerful, chivalrous, pure of heart, quick to give, and passionate about others”, and noted his role as a devoted son and supportive brother whose memory would endure in his community’s hearts. His family also said he was “the most compassionate person to ever visit a mother’s heart,” underscoring the profound impact he had on loved ones.
Classmates and friends echoed these sentiments, remembering Algasim for his warmth, ready smile and eagerness to connect with others. Tributes left at the scene and on social media often used terms like “beautiful boy” and conveyed how deeply his loss was felt among peers and educators alike.
The conviction brings some closure to a case that shocked the local community and drew international attention. Sentencing for Corrigan is scheduled at a later date, but for many those who knew Algasim, his legacy of kindness and the sense of potential cut tragically short remain the focus of collective remembrance.
