Azerbaijan has publicly condemned a drone strike launched from Iranian territory that hit Nakhchivan International Airport and injured civilians, and has warned that it reserves the right to respond with appropriate measures after summoning Tehran’s ambassador in protest.
The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attack — carried out by unmanned Iranian drones — struck the terminal building of Nakhchivan Airport and another drone crashed near a village school in Şekerabad, injuring two civilians and causing infrastructure damage. The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is an Azerbaijani exclave close to Iran’s border. In response, Baku summoned the Iranian ambassador and issued a formal protest, emphasising that the strikes violate international law and have heightened regional tensions.
Azerbaijan’s statement made clear that the country reserves the right to take “appropriate response measures” to defend its territorial integrity. Officials have demanded explanations from Tehran and called on Iran to clarify the circumstances that led to the incursions. Lawmakers and defence officials added that Azerbaijan will take a resolute stance grounded in international law and that the attack could prompt a range of diplomatic or security actions.
The incident underscores the wider spill‑over from the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has seen Iranian forces launch drones and missiles against multiple regional targets as part of its retaliation campaign following strikes by US and Israeli forces on Iranian territory. The conflict has already affected Gulf and neighbouring countries with airspace closures and foreign evacuation efforts.
While it remains unclear whether Azerbaijan will take direct military action, its diplomatic response signals significant concern over regional security and the potential for conflict expansion beyond the immediate Middle East theatre.
