A woman has described the distressing experience of discovering that her identity had been stolen and used by scammers to deceive men online, saying the situation has left her feeling frightened and powerless.
The victim, whose photos and personal details were taken without permission, said she learned about the scheme when strangers began contacting her through social media. Some of them believed they had been communicating with her for months through dating platforms and messaging apps.
According to the woman, fraudsters had created fake profiles using her photographs and name to build relationships with unsuspecting victims. The scammers reportedly posed as her in conversations with men, gaining their trust before eventually attempting to extract money or personal information.
When she first realised what had happened, she described feeling shocked and deeply unsettled. “It’s terrifying,” she said, explaining that people she had never met were suddenly reaching out to her believing she was someone they had been speaking with online.
The experience quickly escalated into a complex situation. Some victims initially struggled to believe that the woman was not the person they had been communicating with, while others felt embarrassed after discovering they had been manipulated by an impersonator.
Online “catfishing” scams have become increasingly common in recent years, with criminals using stolen identities to establish emotional relationships with victims. These scams often begin with seemingly harmless conversations that gradually evolve into requests for financial assistance, gifts or sensitive personal details.
Experts say scammers frequently target individuals through social media platforms and dating websites. By using photographs of real people, they create convincing profiles that can deceive victims for extended periods.
For the woman whose identity was stolen, the ordeal has involved repeated efforts to report fake accounts and warn people who might be contacted by the impersonator. However, she says the process of removing fraudulent profiles from multiple platforms can be slow and frustrating.
Cybersecurity specialists note that identity theft in catfishing scams can have serious emotional consequences for both the victims of the deception and the individuals whose identities are misused. The situation often leads to confusion, harassment and reputational damage for the person whose images were stolen.
Authorities advise social media users to be cautious when interacting with unfamiliar profiles online, particularly if conversations quickly become personal or involve financial requests. Verifying identities through video calls or other direct communication methods can sometimes help reveal fraudulent accounts.
Despite the stress caused by the situation, the woman says she hopes speaking publicly about her experience will raise awareness of how easily online identities can be stolen and manipulated. She believes greater public understanding of these scams may help prevent others from becoming victims in the future.
