An 11-year-old girl has tragically lost her life in a water-related incident at Wacker Quay on the River Lynher near Torpoint, Cornwall, marking the second such tragedy involving a child in the UK this weekend. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 6pm on Saturday after reports of a person in the water. Despite the efforts of police, paramedics, and HM Coastguard teams, the girl, who was from South Devon, was pronounced dead at the scene following emergency treatment.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that her next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. Authorities have stressed that the death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner. Wacker Quay, a scenic inlet of the River Lynher, is well-known for outdoor activities, attracting visitors to its natural beauty.
This heartbreaking incident comes just hours after another child water tragedy in Yorkshire. A 12-year-old boy, last seen swimming in the River Swale near Richmond Falls close to Darlington, was found deceased at 10.45pm on Saturday. The child’s family has been informed, and similarly, the death is not being treated as suspicious.
These incidents have cast a somber shadow over communities across the country, highlighting the dangers associated with rivers and natural water bodies and the need for vigilance around such locations.
