Vietnam is preparing to open one of the world’s largest airports, a monumental development that promises to transform the country into a major international travel hub. Long Thanh International Airport, located near Ho Chi Minh City, is scheduled to open next year after years of meticulous construction. The ambitious project, costing VND336 trillion (£9.5 billion), is expected to rival major airports in Atlanta and Dubai and will significantly boost tourism to the country, particularly from Europe.
Often celebrated as one of the most affordable long-haul destinations, Vietnam has historically been overshadowed by neighbouring Thailand. The new airport, however, is anticipated to change that perception, attracting millions of visitors with its state-of-the-art infrastructure and convenient international connections. Designed to handle up to 100 million passengers annually, the first phase alone is expected to accommodate around 25 million travelers, making it one of the world’s largest hub airports.
The airport will feature three terminals and four runways, with plans for a fourth terminal and runway by 2035. Its main concourse will be crowned with an 82-meter glass roof, artistically shaped like a lotus flower, symbolizing the nation’s cultural heritage. Long Thanh is set to replace Tan Son Nhat International Airport for international flights, while the older airport will continue to serve domestic and short-haul routes.
Strategically located approximately 25 miles from central Ho Chi Minh City, Long Thanh International Airport aims to reduce transfer times and streamline travel for both passengers and cargo. To support this, extensive infrastructure developments are underway, including motorway expansions, a new metro line, and a high-speed train connecting the airport to the city.
Vietnam has gained recognition as one of the world’s most cost-effective travel destinations. According to the Post Office’s 2023 rankings, Hoi An was celebrated as the most affordable beach destination, while the Expat Insider survey last year named Vietnam the most affordable country overall. Visitors can enjoy local delicacies and experiences at remarkably low prices. For example, a bottle of Ho Chi Minh City’s renowned Larue lager costs approximately £1, while a glass of the beloved fresh beer, Bia Hoi, can be enjoyed for as little as 30p.
With its combination of modern design, expansive capacity, and proximity to an affordable, culturally rich travel destination, Long Thanh International Airport is poised to redefine Vietnam’s role on the global aviation map, drawing travellers from across the world to experience both convenience and charm in Southeast Asia.
