The husband of U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez‑DeRemer has been barred from the Department of Labor’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., after at least two female staffers accused him of sexual assault, according to multiple reports citing unnamed officials and police records. The decision has intensified scrutiny on the Labor Department’s leadership and workplace conduct.
Sources familiar with the matter told The New York Times that Dr. Shawn DeRemer, a 57‑year‑old anesthesiologist based in Oregon, was prohibited from entering the department’s main office on Constitution Avenue after the allegations surfaced during an internal investigation. Both complaints reportedly involve claims of inappropriate touching by DeRemer while visiting the department.
A police report filed on 24 January with Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department references an incident on 18 December 2025 at the Labor Department building in which a complainant alleged “forced sexual contact.” One episode of alleged inappropriate behaviour was captured on office security cameras and is being reviewed as part of a criminal investigation by the department’s Sexual Assault Unit.
Following the allegations, security staff were instructed to deny DeRemer access to the Labor Department’s premises. Internal disciplinary actions have also reportedly extended to several senior aides to Secretary Chavez‑DeRemer, who have been placed on administrative leave amid a broader inspector general probe into alleged misconduct by department leadership.
The controversy adds to mounting challenges facing the department under the Trump administration. Separate complaints included allegations that Secretary Chavez‑DeRemer engaged in inappropriate relationships with subordinates, consumed alcohol during work hours, and misused government resources, though her office and legal team have denied wrongdoing and called the claims “unsubstantiated.”
Dr. DeRemer has not publicly addressed the accusations, and the Department of Labor declined to comment on ongoing investigations. The Metropolitan Police Department has confirmed the sexual assault unit’s involvement but has not provided details tied to individual identities due to the sensitivity of the case.
The English Chronicle will continue to monitor this developing story as further information becomes available from law enforcement, congressional oversight, and the inspector general’s office.
