The recent rise to the top of the T20 rankings saved half of Brendon McCullum’s role. Yet the remaining half involving one-day international cricket continues to be a difficult, messy struggle. A six-wicket defeat against India at Edgbaston marked the thirteenth loss in this format recently. England has secured only six total victories since McCullum took charge of the white-ball sides. This poor run of form has seen them slip to eighth in the global rankings. India found a welcome path to recovery after a tough defeat in the T20 matches. Shubman Gill played with elegance while scoring eighty runs to chase down the target easily. He helped his team cross the line with twenty-eight balls to spare on the day. Gill also managed his bowlers with great intelligence throughout the contest on the dry surface. His long love affair with the Birmingham ground continued after his previous success there last year.

Brendon McCullum and Harry Brook unfortunately misread the surface conditions for the opening match today. The dry pitch offered variable bounce which caused issues for the fast bowlers all day. Brook selected five spin options for his team but only included three specialist seam bowlers. This strategy left him short of a genuine wicket-taking threat during the critical middle overs. He was forced to use the majority of Jofra Archer’s bowling quota far too early. An extra seamer would have likely meant that Liam Dawson missed out on the final selection. Yet there would have been almost no contest at all without the reliable all-rounder today. Dawson arrived at the crease with the team struggling at one hundred and seven for six. His determined knock of sixty-eight runs from eighty-three balls provided a vital, fighting platform.

Joe Root also contributed an unbeaten seventy-six to give the bowlers something to defend later. This partnership created a flicker of real hope for a turnaround during the afternoon session. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were kept quiet early on by the disciplined English bowling attack. But at the other end, Gill was in truly princely form against the hosts’ bowlers. He tucked into Josh Tongue early on while taking a huge bite out of the target. Cramp eventually forced the talented batsman to retire hurt during the middle of the chase. There was one further wobble for the Indian team as the match progressed toward completion. Shreyas Iyer was run out for thirty-five via a direct hit from the captain Brook. Tongue also bowled KL Rahul for one to leave India at one hundred and sixty.

This was fleeting, however, as unbeaten half-centuries from Axar Patel and Washington Sundar sealed the result. Patel scored fifty-seven from fifty-two balls while Sundar added fifty-two from sixty-three deliveries today. For England, it was a tale of two collapses that ultimately decided the entire match. The first collapse involved losing six wickets for forty-six runs after a very encouraging start. Captain Brook identified this poor sequence as the main difference between the two competing sides. It was instigated by Gurnoor Brar, a tall fast bowler from Punjab with great potential. He shut down a tortured innings from Jacob Bethell before having Ben Duckett caught deep. Although the key strike came from a more familiar source with Jasprit Bumrah returning now. Bumrah was brought back to target the in-form Brook and found the edge quickly.

This was Bumrah’s first ODI since the World Cup final last year, a long absence. He has dropped out of the rankings entirely, but his true standing is not in doubt. Gill’s smart use of his quick bowlers continued throughout the middle phase of the innings. Prasidh Krishna picked up two wickets as Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, and Will Jacks fell. Had Shivam Dube held a return catch off Root on seven, things would have changed. The important one hundred and twenty-one run stand alongside Dawson would never have even materialized. This period of play allowed maximum fundraising for the prostate cancer charity, established by Willis. Root still finished up with his head in his hands after the match finally concluded. He watched the last four wickets crumble for just thirty runs during the final phase.

England was eventually bowled out for two hundred and fifty-eight inside the forty-eighth over mark. Root may not be the most powerful ball-striker in the side, but he needed support. One further partner beyond Dawson might have allowed him to buff the total even higher. Patel was the bowler to mop up the English tail, finishing with four wickets total. He operated at the death only after Brar became the first victim of severe cramp. Patel’s greatest impact arguably came in the chase, ensuring no let-up in momentum for India. He played a punchy yet controlled innings that kept the scoreboard moving at all times. With a few more runs to play with and another quick, things could differ.

As it was, Brook was largely powerless to prevent this match-winning stand from unfolding today. Sundar sealed the win and his own half-century by launching Adil Rashid back for six. England may be flying in T20 cricket, but this is out of sync with requirements. The next World Cup is a fifty-over affair, which is currently scheduled for late 2027. Brook insisted afterwards it was still a long way off for this specific England group. But McCullum, a head coach now down to half of his previous responsibilities, needs improvements. He could certainly do with a sharp upturn in results during the coming months ahead. This defeat will serve as a stark reminder of the work that remains to be done. The selectors will surely look at the balance of the squad before the next game. Fans will hope for a better performance when the two sides meet once again shortly.
