Published: 02 July 2026. The English Chronicle Desk. The English Chronicle Online.

The United States players stood on the pitch with their hands resting on their heads. Weston McKennie displayed a look of pure disbelief across his face after the call. Mauricio Pochettino waved his arms toward the dark sky, appearing completely and totally incredulous. Folarin Balogun had just been sent off after a very unfortunate collision with Tarik Muharemović. The US striker had accidentally landed a foot on the ankle of his opponent during the play. Just like that, the high-flying American journey suddenly felt like it was facing impending doom. The temperature had soared on a previously cool and sunny evening at the San Francisco stadium. The tension remained very high until Malik Tillman finally had his decisive say on the match. Tillman’s magnificently placed free-kick from the edge of the box provided the perfect finishing touch. It secured a gritty two-nil win over Bosnia and Herzegovina to propel the co-hosts into the round. Pochettino expressed immense pride in all of his players shortly after the final whistle had blown.

Observers might correctly note that this match was only the opening round of the final thirty-two. One could rightfully bemoan the current state of the expanded tournament format featuring forty-eight total teams. Fans are certainly free to complain about the controversial red card decision if they support the Americans. However, the objective fact remains that the US men have now won a major World Cup knockout match. That significant achievement alone vaults this specific group into a different conversation entirely compared to the past. This level of success has not been witnessed since the squad reached the quarter-finals back in the year 2002. Soccer in the United States currently enjoys an entirely different state of popularity compared with those earlier, quieter days. With this victory and the steely demeanor required to achieve it, this team has become a national conversation.

Exactly twelve years to the day since the US lost in extra time to Belgium, they return. The Americans have now set up another massive date at the same tournament stage with the Red Devils. They will face that difficult opponent this coming Monday in the city of Seattle, located in Washington state. On Wednesday, another sold-out and loud pro-US crowd cheered consistently for the home side throughout the night. They were greeted with bright moments to start the match, although the team lacked the early goal scored previously. In the fourth minute, Christian Pulisic mirrored the early danger he had posed against Paraguay in the opening group game. Cutting inside from the left flank, the winger shifted past defenders before rifling a shot that was blocked away. It was the best moment on an otherwise quiet night for the talented Milan star in this specific match.

Pulisic mentioned after the match that they had to dig deep to secure that important victory today. He noted that things did not go exactly to plan following the dismissal of their starting striker teammate. The player said that it simply shows exactly what a good and resilient team they really are now. They spoke during the hydration break about what it takes to be a very strong international side today. They were ultimately able to execute that strategy and defend their lead against a desperate Bosnia and Herzegovina side. The visitors forced an awkward save from Matt Freese early in the match, which resulted in a corner kick. Their young star attempted an audacious goal directly from the corner, but the keeper kept it out with effort.

As the players gathered for the first-half hydration break, a local band played a repeated riff near the field. The US squad matched the band’s commitment to one singular idea for the rest of a very physical half. Sergiño Dest attempted several dangerous runs behind the opposing backline to keep the pressure on their tired defensive unit. McKennie continued to float into open space wherever it happened to appear throughout the midfield during the intense match. Balogun kept threatening the goal by constantly running at the defenders with pace and great purpose throughout the half. The Monaco striker thought he had found the breakthrough after thirty-two minutes of very hard and physical play. Dest’s pressure as the opponents dawdled in possession freed the ball for McKennie, who found his target with speed.

McKennie found Balogun just as he successfully shed his marker near the edge of the penalty area box. An expert finish was applied and the massive home crowd exploded with joy, but the goal was soon called back. Balogun was ruled to be a fraction offside, but the dangerous warning shot had clearly been fired by the hosts. The actual breakthrough finally came just before the end of the first half to settle the very nervous home crowd. Tim Ream was the genesis, getting a good jump on a poor and underhit clearance from the back line. The veteran defender could have settled the ball to himself, but he opted for a much more cultured approach. He provided a first-time knock to McKennie, who played a nifty dummy to confuse the defenders for young Tillman.

The ball was deflected and got caught under the foot of the defender, but Balogun was alert enough to finish. This time, the goal counted and the stadium erupted in celebration for the American side, who led at the break. Balogun could have had a second soon afterwards thanks to some nice combination play between the talented attackers on display. McKennie found Dest with a perfectly timed loft over the top of the defense that split the line with ease. Dest’s header across the goal was met by Balogun, but the ball kissed the top of the crossbar and went out.

The US defense may have thought they had been handed a reprieve when their star striker was forced off injured. But they soon had much bigger problems to worry about when the red card was issued by the head official. In the sixty-fourth minute, the two players came together chasing a loose ball, with the striker landing on an ankle. The referee went to the monitor for a video review and sent off the striker, changing the entire game dynamic. From there, it was all hands on deck for the US defense, with the visitors showing much more attacking verve. But the US never stopped pressuring, and it paid off as Dest earned a free-kick on the edge of the area. Tillman stepped up and hit a beautiful dipping effort that went over the wall and under the bar for victory. Incredibly, Belgium will be the fourth opponent out of five at this tournament whom the US have played recently. That previous matchup leaves little room for confidence after a heavy loss involving many players on this current roster. But after this hard-earned win, there is the sense that these players could possibly go as far as they want.
