Erling Haaland arrived on the grandest international football stage with immense expectations on his broad shoulders. The prolific Manchester City striker instantly delivered a match-defining performance to secure a crucial opening victory. French forward Kylian Mbappé had already set the standard with two goals against tough Senegal. Haaland responded in spectacular fashion by scoring his own impressive double during the first half. This clinical display confirmed his status as one of the most lethal finishers in football. His relentless pursuit of the tournament Golden Boot clearly depends on Norway progressing very far. The nation expects great things because their hopes are so heavily reliant on his talent.

The connection between this incredible individual talent and his proud native country remains incredibly powerful. The famous name on his shirt changes slightly when he represents his beloved home country. He becomes Braut Haaland for Norway but his attacking output remains identically ruthless and devastating. Football supporters across the United Kingdom and Europe recognise his unique ability to change matches. This energetic twenty-five-year-old superstar is a player you simply cannot take your eyes off. The Iraqi defense lost concentration twice during the match and suffered some severe consequences today.

Haaland used his post-match media duties to playfully contradict the words of his head coach. On the eve of this match Ståle Solbakken branded Haaland the finest goalscorer alive. The modest striker pointed out his seasonal numbers were bettered by Mbappé and Harry Kane. Those elite forwards enjoyed highly productive campaigns during the long European club season just passed. He did however deliver a stern warning regarding his current level of physical intensity. The striker stated that the passionate fans saw the same great energy as before today. He added that the squad must be happy but they must also remain completely calm.

The Norwegian team had waited twenty-eight long years to make their grand World Cup return. They successfully saw off a determined opponent that had not participated for forty long years. Iraq emerged with great credit from a historic match played in front of global audiences. The massive gap of thirty places in the official world rankings was not always obvious. The Asian nation fought bravely and caused several problems for the European heavyweights throughout today. Their technical quality in possession surprised many commentators who predicted an incredibly easy Norwegian victory.

Norway will certainly need to improve ahead of their upcoming matches in this tough group. They looked occasionally shaky in the defensive third when Iraq played quick counter-attacking football. Mbappé will have taken note because France face Norway in the final group stage fixture. Yet this historic afternoon truly belonged to Haaland who grabbed every single major headline today. Martin Ødegaard was slightly less visible than his fellow superstar teammate during the first half. Albeit the influential Arsenal playmaker beautifully created his side’s decisive third goal of the match. The creative captain was substituted shortly afterwards to save his energy for much sterner tests.

Even in the final dramatic seconds of stoppage time Haaland’s hard work was not done. His looping header from a superb Kristoffer Ajer cross made Aymen Hussein panic under pressure. The defender was pressured heavily by Kristian Thorstvedt and bundled the ball into his net. Norway’s opening victory had some extra gloss applied just before the referee blew his whistle. The final whistle triggered wild celebrations among the travelling supporters who traveled from northern Europe. This crucial result provides a perfect platform for their ambitious journey in this global competition.

It took a little over two minutes for the primary narrative of this match to unfold. Antonio Nusa played a glorious high pass directly into the path of the marauding striker. More than sixty thousand passionate fans gasped loudly in anticipation of an early opening goal. Uncharacteristically the reliable number nine was unable to get the ball under proper control today. The visible ripples of excitement across the stadium were completely obvious to every single spectator. Four minutes later Haaland easily left defender Zaid Tahseen for dust with incredible acceleration. He was unfortunately unable to pick out teammate Alexander Sørloth for an easy tap-in finish. Iraq responded quickly through Ali al-Hamadi who scooped a decent scoring chance over the crossbar.

Norway are a fascinating team who have split footballing opinion before this major tournament began. Whether they are underrated or completely overrated are views that have been widely articulated recently. The massive star appeal of Haaland and Ødegaard definitely sets this unique squad completely apart. Such world-class talent is highly impressive for a proud nation of fewer than six million. There is also a very clear depth of emerging young talent across the entire roster. The exciting Antonio Nusa was particularly lively tonight causing massive problems down the left flank. Oscar Bobb who would walk into most international teams was named among the substitutes today.

This group of players is rightly portrayed as a wonderful golden generation of Norwegian footballers. With that high praise comes massive expectation and immense pressure to perform on this stage. They faced an opponent that many pundits considered rather underwhelming before the opening whistle blew. The inspiring journey of Iraq to successfully reach the World Cup finals deserves immense international praise. They played more grueling qualifying matches than any other nation during their long campaign trail. They overcame massive logistical challenges imposed by the ongoing tragic war in the Middle East. Nonetheless it will be a major shock if they do not finish bottom of Group I.

The official record books will show that Haaland’s historic first moment arrived quite early on. His inevitable first goal on this magnificent stage occurred in the twenty-ninth minute of play. Nusa who was bamboozling Iraq with his touch fed David Møller Wolfe perfectly. Haaland quickly beat a direct path to the back post with his signature intelligent movement. From there he easily converted Møller Wolfe’s accurate low cross from all of two yards. The big striker showed exactly why he is trusted when the big moment finally arrives. His international statistics remain absolutely absurd after this latest impressive performance on the world stage. This opening goal was his eleventh strike in eleven competitive outings for his beloved country.

What happened next during this thrilling encounter was certainly not written in the script. Iraq became the latest underdogs to provide massive shockwaves in this World Cup tournament. Their stunning equaliser was of great quality and made national football history today. Ali Jassim found Amir al-Ammari who stood up a delicate and accurate cross. Aymen Hussein outjumped a clutch of defenders to plant a magnificent header home. The scale of euphoria depicted perfectly the massive significance of that historic goal.

Haaland is prolific enough without opposing players gifting him excellent goalscoring opportunities. Iraq held on to their precious parity for barely three dramatic minutes today. Goalkeeper Jalal Hassan paused rather than rushing to boot a clear back-pass away. Haaland spotted the uncertainty and deflected the ball directly into the open net. This goal restored Norway’s lead before Leo Østigård sealed the win later on.
