A woman has tragically died, and a man remains in critical condition after being attacked by a shark while swimming at a remote beach in New South Wales, Australia. Authorities reported the incident occurred at Kylies Beach, located within Crowdy Bay National Park, approximately 300km north of Sydney.
Police confirmed the woman, believed to be in her 20s, died at the scene. The man, also in his 20s, was airlifted to a hospital in Newcastle for urgent medical care. Paramedics praised a bystander who applied a makeshift tourniquet to the man’s leg, an act credited with potentially saving his life.
“The courage from some bystanders is amazing in this situation,” NSW Ambulance Superintendent Josh Smyth said. “To put yourself out there is heroic and obviously it did give us time to get to that male patient.”
The Department of Primary Industries said the shark involved was likely a large bull shark, a species known to be one of the few potentially dangerous sharks to humans. According to the Australian Museum, bull sharks are the third deadliest shark species, capable of living in both fresh and salt water.
Following the attack, Kylies Beach has been closed, and authorities have deployed “smart” drumlines to lure, tag, and release sharks safely. Surf Life Saving NSW announced that surrounding beaches will also remain closed for 24 hours while drones monitor the area for any further threats.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and our deepest condolences go to the families of the woman and man involved,” said Steve Pearce, chief executive of Surf Life Saving NSW. “For now, please remain clear of the water at beaches in the vicinity and follow the direction of lifeguards.”
This incident marks the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia this year. The most recent occurred less than three months ago on Sydney’s northern beaches, highlighting ongoing concerns over public safety in Australian waters.
Authorities continue to investigate the attack and have urged the public to exercise extreme caution while swimming in the affected region.
