Parents in tears as court hears summer camp predator Jon Ruben’s victims were ‘tired and floppy’ after eating laced sweets

Parents wept in Leicester Crown Court this week as prosecutors described how children at a summer camp became “tired and floppy” after eating sweets laced with drugs by accused predator Jon Ruben, a 76-year-old former vet and long-time camp leader who has admitted to drugging and sexually assaulting youngsters in his care. The harrowing testimony highlighted the disturbing methods Ruben used to incapacitate children before committing serious offences, leaving families devastated and clamouring for justice as sentencing approaches.

Ruben — who ran holiday camps for at least 27 years under the guise of charity work and who sobbed as he entered guilty pleas this week — orchestrated what prosecutors called a “sweet game”, encouraging children aged between eight and 11 to eat candies that had been injected with tranquillising substances before bedtime. On the mornings after camp activities, many of the children were found with slurred speech, difficulty walking and profound drowsiness — descriptions that left parents visibly shaken during courtroom hearings.

Distressing Evidence and Emotional Courtroom Scenes

Prosecutor Mary Prior KC told the court how youngsters who participated in the game were later discovered to have ingested sweets that were “laced with tranquillising drugs,” leaving several unable to be roused easily and requiring hospital treatment. The phrase “tired and floppy” was used to describe the drugged state of some victims, a chilling image for families who saw their children reduced to such vulnerability.

Parents of the young victims attended the hearing, some in tears, as evidence was laid out about how Ruben allegedly manipulated his position of trust to exploit children at Stathern Lodge in Leicestershire. Eight children aged eight to 11 and one adult were taken to hospital following the incident, not knowing the sugar-coated treats they were offered were administered with powerful sedatives.

A Long History of Hidden Suffering

The court heard that Ruben’s use of drug-laced sweets was not a one-off occurrence. Prosecutors said that over many years children often felt unwell after playing the game, with Ruben dismissing their symptoms as mere over-excitement or the effects of an exciting holiday. Families now say they regret trusting the camp and grieve for the lost innocence of their children, many of whom still struggle with the memory of the ordeal.

In addition to the charges related to drugging and sexual assault, Ruben has admitted a string of other offences, including child cruelty counts, making indecent images of children and multiple drug-related charges connected to his actions at the camp and in his personal life. The judge presiding over the case said the sentencing hearing — set for later this week — will be “a very tough day” for all involved.

Impact on Families and Community

Parents and volunteers who once saw the summer camp as a safe haven — a place where children from disadvantaged backgrounds could make friends and enjoy new experiences — are now confronting a starkly different reality. Many of them sobbed in the gallery as details emerged, reflecting the profound emotional toll that Ruben’s crimes have had on families, friends and the wider community.

Support services have been offered to families in the wake of the revelations, and child welfare experts warn that long-term psychological support will be crucial for young victims who have endured such betrayal by someone once entrusted with their care.

Next Steps in the Case

Ruben faces sentencing later this week, with the court expected to consider the severity and duration of his abuse, including the use of controlled drugs to incapacitate victims and the betrayal of trust inherent in his roles as teacher, charity leader and camp organiser. Families attending the hearing have vowed to continue advocating for greater protections and awareness to prevent similar abuses in the future.
