The desperate search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of US broadcast journalist Savannah Guthrie, has taken an international turn as investigators widen their inquiry into Mexico amid mounting frustration over a lack of breakthrough leads in her mysterious disappearance. As the case enters its third week, authorities are pursuing every possible avenue in a frantic effort to determine what happened to the elderly woman, who vanished from her Tucson, Arizona home on 1 February 2026.
Local and federal law enforcement agencies in the United States — including the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office — have been inundated with tens of thousands of tips, but so far no confirmed sightings or arrests have emerged. Frustrations have grown as DNA evidence and surveillance footage have yet to yield a clear suspect despite the circulation of images showing a masked individual near Guthrie’s home on the night she disappeared.
In a significant new development, investigators have reportedly reached out to Mexican authorities for assistance, raising the possibility — yet unverified — that Guthrie might have been taken across the border. According to reports, the FBI has contacted multiple law enforcement agencies in Mexico and shared information about the case, although there is currently no official confirmation that she was transported into Mexican territory.
This outreach coincides with the involvement of The Searching Mothers of Sonora, a Mexican non-profit organisation that specialises in tracing missing persons cases in northern Mexico. A family member is said to have contacted the group in hopes of gaining additional regional support, particularly in areas close to the international boundary with Arizona.
Despite speculation and online theorising about a possible cross-border abduction, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has emphasised there is no concrete evidence that Guthrie was taken into Mexico. He has reiterated investigators’ confidence that the search will continue with or without border involvement, suggesting she could be held somewhere near her Tucson home.
Investigators remain focused on forensic leads at Guthrie’s residence, where DNA recovered from items including a glove has produced no matches in the FBI’s national database so far. Law enforcement officials also continue to analyse surveillance footage showing a masked figure removing or disabling a doorbell camera just before her disappearance.
The FBI has increased the reward for credible information leading to Guthrie’s location — now up to $100,000 — and law enforcement has released additional imagery in hopes of identifying the person of interest. Savannah Guthrie and her family have made multiple public appeals for help, hoping for information that could lead to her safe return.
Despite the international angle and the broad scope of investigative efforts, authorities caution that engaging Mexican law enforcement is a standard procedure for cases near international borders and does not necessarily indicate evidence of cross-border movement. Still, the expansion of the search has underscored the complexity and emotional toll of the case, which has captivated public attention nationwide.
As days turn into weeks with no definitive conclusion, authorities have vowed to follow every credible lead in the hunt for Guthrie, a mystery that has become one of the most challenging and high-profile missing person cases in recent US memory.
