The unfolding controversy surrounding Prince Andrew deepened as police continue searches of his former home and the UK government refused to rule out a wider inquiry into his alleged links with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Authorities are investigating allegations tied to Andrew’s conduct during his tenure as Britain’s trade envoy, with mounting calls for accountability from politicians and public figures.
The former royal was arrested on Thursday — his 66th birthday — on suspicion of misconduct in public office after allegations arose that he shared sensitive government information with Epstein during official duties. He spent nearly 11 hours in police custody and was released under investigation. Thames Valley Police have since carried out searches at his former residence, Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, as well as other properties, in an ongoing probe.
Responding to questions about whether a judge‑led public inquiry might be launched into the former prince’s ties to Epstein, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said officials would consider “any sensible proposals” but stressed it was too early, with active police work still ongoing. She emphasised that authorities need time and space to complete their investigations before any further steps are taken.
Calls for a broader investigation have come not only from opposition politicians but also from some within Westminster, with remarks that an inquiry might explore whether national security or public trust were at risk. Former security minister Sir Tom Tugendhat has even urged a parliamentary treason investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police has also been speaking with former royal protection officers who served Andrew, asking them to reflect on any information they might have encountered during their time on duty that could assist the inquiry.
King King Charles III has publicly stated that “no one is above the law” and pledged full cooperation with investigators, while commentators say the developments are unprecedented in modern royal history and could have lasting implications for the monarchy’s standing.
As searches continue and debates rage over whether Andrew should be stripped from the line of succession or face further legislative scrutiny, the situation remains one of the most serious in recent royal and political memory, with investigations expected to continue in the weeks ahead.
