A man in Peterborough, England was astonished to find a collection of trading cards worth an estimated £18,000 stored away in his loft, a local dealer has said, highlighting the growing popularity and value of collectible cards such as Pokémon among enthusiasts across the UK.
Juliano Scibelli, owner of Collectors Corner in Peterborough’s Orton Southgate, said that demand for trading cards has surged in recent years, driven by nostalgia and a new generation of collectors willing to pay high prices for rare and well‑preserved editions. Some cards can fetch thousands of pounds individually, and it has become common for families to rediscover valuable collections stashed away in lofts or cupboards.
Scibelli recalled that a customer approached him about a month ago after finding a large stock of cards in his loft. “It was unbelievable — he had all the stuff we’d consider expensive,” Scibelli said, noting that the estimated total value of the find was around £18,000. The man contacted the shop with photos of the collection but said he did not intend to sell it yet.
Traders said that people often form deep personal attachments to their card collections, which may sit unnoticed for decades from childhood onward before being evaluated by dealers. Enthusiasts travel from across the UK to inspect stock at specialist shops, and dedicated fans — from seasoned collectors to newcomers — seek out both iconic and less‑known cards.
Scibelli advised those with old collections to have them assessed, even if stored away for years, because values can vary widely and some pieces may be far more valuable than expected. The market for trading cards, particularly Pokémon, has become robust enough that nostalgic finds can translate into significant sums when sold or auctioned.
