Instagram has launched an investigation into AI-generated profiles that appear to sexualize or fetishise disabled people, amid growing concerns over algorithmic content and online harassment. The platform, owned by Meta, said it is reviewing these accounts to ensure compliance with its community standards and to prevent exploitation or harm.
Disability advocacy groups have highlighted the issue as part of a broader pattern of online discrimination, warning that AI-generated content can amplify harmful stereotypes. “These AI profiles are not only dehumanizing, but they also reinforce dangerous misconceptions about people with disabilities,” said Samantha Riley, spokesperson for a UK-based disability rights organisation.
Instagram confirmed that the investigation involves machine learning models that generate images or profiles and the algorithms that suggest these accounts to users. The company said it is taking steps to remove inappropriate AI-generated content and is working to improve safeguards against misuse of generative AI on its platform.
Experts note that as AI tools become more widely accessible, the risk of automated content being used for exploitation grows, particularly against marginalized communities. They emphasize the importance of human oversight, ethical AI design, and reporting mechanisms to prevent such harm.
Meta has previously faced scrutiny for failing to address targeted abuse and harassment online, and the current investigation reflects increasing pressure from both regulators and advocacy groups to ensure that AI technologies are responsible and inclusive. Instagram plans to provide updates as the review progresses and may implement new filtering and monitoring tools to prevent further misuse.
The situation underscores ongoing challenges in moderating AI-driven content on social media platforms, particularly content that can perpetuate inequality, harm, or exploitation of vulnerable populations.
