Instagram Investigates AI Profiles Fetishising Disabled People

Instagram has launched an investigation into AI-generated profiles that appear to sexualize or fetishise disabled people, amid growing concerns over algorithmic content and online harassment. The platform, owned by Meta, said it is reviewing these accounts to ensure compliance with its community standards and to prevent exploitation or harm.

Disability advocacy groups have highlighted the issue as part of a broader pattern of online discrimination, warning that AI-generated content can amplify harmful stereotypes. “These AI profiles are not only dehumanizing, but they also reinforce dangerous misconceptions about people with disabilities,” said Samantha Riley, spokesperson for a UK-based disability rights organisation.

Instagram confirmed that the investigation involves machine learning models that generate images or profiles and the algorithms that suggest these accounts to users.
