Biker Suffers Fractured Spine After Hitting Pothole in Edinburgh

A motorcyclist has been left with a fractured spine after hitting a large pothole on a road in Edinburgh, prompting renewed concerns over the city’s road maintenance and safety for two-wheeled vehicles.

The incident occurred when the rider, travelling along a busy urban street, struck the pothole unexpectedly, causing them to lose control and crash. Emergency services were called to the scene, and the motorcyclist was taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities confirmed that the injuries included a spinal fracture and multiple bruises, and the victim remains under medical observation.

Local road safety campaigners highlighted the dangers potholes pose to cyclists and motorcyclists, particularly in areas where heavy traffic and poor lighting may reduce reaction times. “Even minor imperfections in the road can have catastrophic consequences for bikers,” said a spokesperson from a regional safety group. “This incident underlines the urgent need for better road maintenance and reporting systems.”
