A designer clothing store in Livingston has been targeted in a ram-raid in which suspects smashed a car through the premises before setting the vehicle alight in what investigators believe was an attempt to destroy evidence.
Police said the incident occurred during the early hours, when a stolen or deliberately used vehicle was driven into the front entrance of the retail unit, causing significant structural damage and allowing the offenders to gain rapid access to the store’s interior. The gang is understood to have removed a quantity of high-value designer goods before fleeing the scene.
Shortly after the raid, the vehicle used in the attack was torched nearby, intensifying the emergency response. Fire crews were deployed to extinguish the blaze, while police secured the surrounding area to preserve forensic evidence. Investigators believe the deliberate burning of the motor may have been intended to hinder identification of those involved.
The combined tactics of vehicle impact and arson are consistent with a method commonly referred to as a ram-raid, a form of burglary that relies on forceful entry using a car or van. Such incidents often target retail premises containing luxury goods that can be quickly removed and resold.
Authorities have launched a full criminal investigation, including examination of CCTV footage, forensic analysis of debris from the vehicle, and witness inquiries in the surrounding area. Detectives are appealing for information from members of the public who may have seen suspicious activity before or after the incident.
The store sustained substantial damage to its frontage, with repairs expected to take time. Business owners in the vicinity expressed concern over both the immediate destruction and the broader implications for retail security in the area. Incidents of this nature can disrupt trading, increase insurance costs, and affect local confidence.
Police have not yet confirmed the number of individuals involved, but early indications suggest a coordinated group operation. Investigators are working to determine whether the offenders had prior knowledge of the store’s layout or stock levels.
Community representatives have condemned the attack, describing it as reckless and disruptive to local commerce. Retail crime, particularly involving vehicle-based break-ins, has been a growing concern in parts of the UK, prompting discussions about enhanced protective measures such as reinforced barriers, improved surveillance, and rapid-response security systems.
Officers have urged anyone with dashcam footage, doorbell recordings, or information related to the vehicle used in the attack to come forward. Authorities have reiterated that arson-related offences are treated with particular seriousness due to the risks posed to nearby properties and public safety.
As the investigation continues, forensic teams remain focused on reconstructing the sequence of events and identifying those responsible. Police say updates will follow once further evidence has been analysed.
The incident marks another example of organised retail crime employing destructive entry methods, underscoring ongoing challenges faced by businesses in protecting high-value inventory from coordinated theft attempts.
