A suspected terror attack outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Greater Manchester on Thursday morning has left at least two people dead and several others seriously injured, with armed police responding to the unfolding violence. The incident, which occurred on Middleton Road in Crumpsall, has sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly as it coincided with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic and terrifying scene as a man drove a vehicle towards pedestrians outside the synagogue before emerging to carry out stabbing attacks. Chava Lewin, who lives next door to the synagogue and identifies herself as a religious Jew, recounted the horrifying moments she witnessed. “I was outside and heard a banging sound and I thought it might be a firework. My husband went outside and then ran back inside and said, ‘There’s been a terrorist attack’,” Lewin told the PA news agency.

She described seeing the suspect get out of the vehicle and immediately attack those nearby, including attempting to target the synagogue’s security guard and forcibly break into the building. “The second he got out of the car he started stabbing anyone near him. He went for the security guard and tried to break into the synagogue. He was in the courtyard,” Lewin said. She added that someone inside had barricaded the doors, preventing further access, and noted the overwhelming shock experienced by those present.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that three additional people are in serious condition following the attack, and that officers were called to the scene at 9:31 a.m. after a member of the public reported seeing a car driving towards pedestrians and a man being stabbed. The force promptly declared “Plato,” the national code-word for a marauding terrorist attack, and classified the incident as a major emergency at 9:37 a.m.

Social media footage from the scene captured panicked members of the public alerting firearms officers to the presence of a suspected bomb on the attacker. Armed police arrived quickly, and shots were fired at the suspect at 9:38 a.m., though authorities later stated that the individual’s condition could not be immediately confirmed due to safety concerns relating to suspicious items found on him.

Video circulating online depicts officers aiming firearms at a person lying outside the synagogue’s front entrance. The suspect is seen attempting to rise from the ground before gunfire is heard, and the individual collapses. Another person is visible lying motionless near the synagogue gates, with blood near their head, highlighting the brutality of the attack.

Gareth, a delivery driver who witnessed the events and spoke to BBC Radio Manchester, provided a harrowing account of the incident. He described seeing the attacker stabbing windows in an attempt to gain access to the synagogue, and witnessing multiple individuals injured or unconscious on the ground. “We got a bit closer. We seen a guy bleeding out on the floor. He was just basically unconscious on the floor, presumed, obviously, dead,” Gareth said. “And then literally, there was a guy in front of the car. He’s just lay on the floor. We couldn’t really see him. And like there was a few people stood in the road. Somebody shouted something ‘he’s in the school or the synagogue’, or what it was. And then, as we looked over, the guy had a knife, and he was just stabbing the window trying to get in the school. And then within seconds the police arrived. They gave him a couple of warnings. He didn’t listen, so they opened fire. He went down on the floor, and then he started getting back up, and then they shot him again.”

Paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 9:47 a.m., and bomb disposal crews were deployed after 11 a.m. to address potential explosives attached to the suspect. Authorities continue to assess the situation, and the investigation remains ongoing as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

Local community leaders have expressed deep concern for the victims and their families while condemning the attack in the strongest possible terms. Officials emphasized the vulnerability of places of worship during times of religious observance and the need for increased security measures. Religious leaders called for calm and unity, urging the public to support the victims while law enforcement agencies conduct their investigation.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that the area remains cordoned off and are advising residents and passersby to avoid the vicinity while the response operation continues. Officers are working alongside national counterterrorism units to ensure the safety of the community and to examine any potential links the attacker may have had with broader extremist networks.

The incident has prompted widespread coverage and reactions across the UK, with political leaders and public figures expressing solidarity with the Jewish community. Authorities reiterated that no further attacks have been reported at this time, and investigations are ongoing to determine whether the incident involved a lone attacker or a coordinated plan.

The attack highlights the persistent threat posed by lone-actor assaults, particularly against religious communities, and underscores the importance of vigilance, rapid emergency response, and community resilience in the face of terror. Emergency services have commended the swift response of both armed officers and paramedics, whose actions likely prevented further casualties.

As the investigation continues, officials are also working to provide support and counselling for those traumatized by the events, including worshippers, bystanders, and first responders. Local Jewish organizations have expressed their grief and called for collective efforts to combat hate crimes and strengthen security measures around places of worship.

The events at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing global challenges posed by extremism, and the critical need for law enforcement, community leaders, and citizens to collaborate in preventing such attacks. Authorities have assured the public that all necessary resources will be deployed to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected and to bring clarity to the tragic sequence of events that unfolded on Thursday morning.

The situation remains fluid, and police investigations are likely to continue for days, with forensic and intelligence teams examining evidence to reconstruct the exact timeline and motives behind the suspected terror attack. Meanwhile, local residents and religious communities remain on high alert as law enforcement maintains heightened security around key sites in Greater Manchester.

This tragic event has not only impacted the immediate victims but also reignited discussions about security measures at religious institutions, the threat of lone-actor violence, and the broader implications for counterterrorism strategies in urban environments across the UK. Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity, and cooperate fully with ongoing investigations as they seek to prevent further incidents and provide justice for those affected.
