Liverpool’s Premier League title defence suffered another blow on Sunday as Manchester United stunned the reigning champions with a 2–1 victory at Anfield, marking the visitors’ first win at the ground in more than nine years. The defeat extended Liverpool’s run of poor form to four consecutive losses in all competitions and left head coach Arne Slot confronting mounting pressure.
The match saw Liverpool dominate possession and create numerous chances, but inefficiency in front of goal and persistent set-piece vulnerabilities proved costly. Harry Maguire’s late header secured victory for United, while the early opener from Bryan Mbeumo set the tone, arriving just 62 seconds into the game while Alexis Mac Allister lay injured. Slot later revealed that Mac Allister required four stitches from a head injury and suggested referee Michael Oliver might have halted play, but insisted that the team’s missed opportunities were the primary reason for defeat.
Cody Gakpo came close to rescuing a point for Liverpool, hitting the woodwork three times and missing a clear header in the final minutes. Despite creating a flurry of chances, the Reds were unable to convert their attacking efforts into goals. Slot acknowledged the team’s attacking work but emphasised that finishing and defensive lapses, particularly on set pieces, were undermining their performances. “We created an unbelievable amount of chances,” Slot said. “If we keep producing this but improve in key areas, there is every reason to expect we will win games again.”
Slot admitted that managing Liverpool in its current state is a significant challenge. “When you are at a big club, replacing a figure like Jürgen Klopp is already the biggest test. Losing four in a row adds a new dimension to that challenge. The life of a football manager is an ongoing series of challenges,” he said. Despite the setbacks, he remains confident that his team can bounce back if they maintain their attacking intensity and address their shortcomings.
For Manchester United, the victory was a morale-boosting milestone. Rúben Amorim praised his side’s composure and spirit, particularly after Gakpo’s equaliser, and insisted the result would not change their objectives for the season. “We want to try to win three games in a row and focus on Europe. This doesn’t change anything,” he said. The win also marked United’s first back-to-back Premier League victories under Amorim, a point highlighted by Maguire, who called it “massive” for confidence and consistency.
Maguire admitted the long-awaited consecutive wins were a surprising statistic, saying, “It’s embarrassing that it took 51 games. Now that’s out of the way, we want to build on this and aim for a third win against Brighton.” He praised the team’s fight and the manager’s standards, acknowledging that while the win was important, there remains work to achieve consistent performances.
Liverpool’s struggles now extend beyond single matches. Defensive errors, set-piece lapses, and repeated missed chances have left the team in a precarious position. The midfield has struggled to dominate games, and the attack, though still fluid, has been unable to finish decisive opportunities. Fans and pundits alike have voiced concern about the team’s trajectory, questioning whether Slot can turn the tide in time to keep the title challenge alive.
Looking ahead, Liverpool face crucial upcoming fixtures, including trips to Newcastle and a Champions League clash against Galatasaray. Slot will need to restore confidence and convert chances if the Reds hope to recover form. United, meanwhile, will aim to build momentum after their morale-boosting victory, targeting consistent results in the Premier League and Europe.
The contrasting fortunes of the two clubs were evident as the match ended. Slot stood solemnly on the touchline, aware of the work required, while Amorim celebrated with his players, united and confident. Liverpool’s season is not lost, but the next few matches will be crucial in determining whether Slot can stabilise the team and justify his appointment at one of England’s most demanding clubs.
