Police have named the woman who died in a two-vehicle collision involving a bus and a car in Templepatrick as 23-year-old Claudia Jaczyk. The fatal crash occurred on the Ballyrobin Road, one of the main routes to Belfast International Airport, shortly before 08:00 GMT on Saturday morning.
Emergency services attended the scene following reports of a serious collision between a black Citroen C1 and a bus operating on an airport service route. Ms Jaczyk, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of first responders. Police confirmed that she was from the Newtownabbey area.
The driver of the bus, a man in his 60s, was taken to hospital for treatment. Authorities described his injuries as serious but not believed to be life threatening. No further details regarding other passengers have been released, though police have indicated that inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
A spokesperson for Translink confirmed that one of the company’s airport bus services was involved in the collision. In a statement, the transport operator said it was cooperating fully with investigators and other relevant authorities as the investigation continues. The company expressed sympathy for those affected, stating that the safety and well-being of passengers and staff remains its highest priority.
The Ballyrobin Road was closed for a number of hours following the crash to allow for forensic examination and collision investigation procedures. Diversions were put in place while officers conducted detailed assessments of the scene, including vehicle positions, road conditions and potential witness accounts. The road reopened on Sunday once the investigation work was completed.
Police have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dash-cam footage from the area at the time to come forward. Investigators are particularly keen to speak with drivers who were travelling along the Ballyrobin Road shortly before the crash occurred.
Local residents described the stretch of road as a busy commuter route, especially during early morning hours due to its proximity to Belfast International Airport. Community members expressed sadness at the loss of a young life and extended condolences to Ms Jaczyk’s family and friends.
Road traffic collisions remain a serious concern across Northern Ireland, with authorities regularly urging motorists to exercise caution and remain vigilant. Police reiterated that establishing the cause of this collision will take time, and they have asked the public to avoid speculation while inquiries are underway.
As the investigation continues, support is being provided to the family of the deceased. The naming of Ms Jaczyk marks a deeply painful moment for her loved ones, who are now coming to terms with a sudden and tragic loss.
