As the world marks the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full‑scale invasion of Ukraine, Queen Victoria Square in Hull, England, is set to be illuminated in blue and yellow colours today in a gesture of support for the Ukrainian people. The light display reflects continuing solidarity with Ukraine nearly four years after the conflict began on 24 February 2022, a war that has displaced millions and reshaped European security dynamics.
Hull City Council said the square will light up from dusk, with the Ukrainian flag already flying at the city’s Guildhall, symbolising the community’s opposition to the Russian invasion and its ongoing support for those affected by the war. Leader of the council, Mike Ross, emphasised that the city’s tribute honours both the suffering endured by Ukrainians and the resilience they have shown in the face of prolonged conflict.
The lighting of Queen Victoria Square forms part of a broader pattern of symbolic actions across Europe and beyond as cities, institutions and communities mark the anniversary of the war. In Brussels, EU institutional buildings were illuminated in the colours of the Ukrainian flag and a commemorative event was held at Grand‑Place, combining light projections with performances to reflect on the human impact of the conflict.
Supporters of Ukraine in various countries have organised rallies, marches and memorial events coinciding with the anniversary. In Latvia’s capital Riga, gatherings have included early‑morning solidarity campaigns and marches carrying lights to honour victims and show sustained backing for Ukraine’s aspirations for freedom and peace.
Local councils elsewhere are also visibly demonstrating support: Sheffield City Council will fly the Ukrainian flag over its Town Hall for the anniversary, highlighting the widespread municipal gestures of solidarity aimed at acknowledging both the continued human cost of the war and the global demand for a peaceful resolution.
The symbolic displays underscore the enduring international backing for Ukraine at a time when diplomatic efforts and military assistance continue, even as the conflict persists into its fourth year with significant humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.
