A veteran former firefighter has commended the professionalism and efficiency of crews responding to a major blaze in Glasgow, highlighting the risks and challenges faced by emergency services during the incident. The fire, which broke out in a multi-storey residential building, prompted a swift response from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and emergency personnel across the city.

John McAlister, who served for over 30 years with the Glasgow Fire Brigade before retiring, praised the coordination and dedication of firefighters tackling the blaze. “The crews demonstrated exceptional bravery and teamwork under extremely difficult conditions,” he said. “From containing the fire to ensuring residents were evacuated safely, their professionalism was exemplary.”

The blaze, reported in the early hours of the morning, required multiple fire engines and specialist equipment. Emergency services confirmed that several residents were evacuated without serious injury, though some property was damaged. Authorities are continuing investigations to determine the cause of the fire.

McAlister also noted the physical and mental demands placed on firefighters during such operations. “Even for experienced personnel, large-scale fires in densely populated areas present complex challenges,” he said. “The crews’ ability to act decisively and safely in these situations is a testament to their training and commitment to public safety.”

Local residents have expressed gratitude for the swift intervention of fire services. Social media posts highlighted the courage of firefighters and praised their rapid containment of the blaze, which prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that debriefing and support services were being offered to both firefighters and affected residents. Officials reiterated the importance of fire safety measures and urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly in high-risk areas during the winter months.

For McAlister, the incident reinforces the critical role of frontline firefighters. He emphasised the need for continued investment in equipment, training, and staffing to ensure that emergency services can respond effectively to incidents of increasing scale and complexity.

“Glasgow has seen its share of challenging fires, and each incident underscores the value of professional and well-prepared crews,” he said. “Communities owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women who put themselves at risk to protect others.”

Authorities confirmed that the building is now safe and that repairs are underway. Investigations will continue to determine the cause and whether any safety breaches contributed to the fire, with local council and fire service representatives working together to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The blaze and the subsequent response serve as a reminder of the dangers inherent in urban firefighting and the importance of ongoing support and recognition for emergency services personnel.
