British professional wrestler Jamie Hayter has returned to the ring after a debilitating back injury left her fearing that her wrestling career could be over.

Hayter, who performs for All Elite Wrestling (AEW), suffered two herniated discs in 2023 and spent about a year away from competition. During the worst period of her recovery, the pain was so severe that she struggled with even basic daily tasks, including feeding her cats and making a cup of coffee.

Now back performing in Britain, the 31-year-old Southampton wrestler says the experience has changed her outlook on both wrestling and life. Rather than returning with the same intensity and pressure she once placed on herself, Hayter says the long period away from the ring gave her a more measured perspective.

“The worst was the first few months because I was really unsure of things,” she said. “The pain was at its highest and I was bed bound.”

She described a period when she could do little more than get out of bed, feed her cats, make coffee and return to rest. The uncertainty surrounding her recovery was compounded by the emotional toll of being unable to do the work that had defined so much of her adult life.

“I was sitting there depressed, thinking I’m not doing anything, nothing is going on in my life, and it was hard to see a positive light,” Hayter said.

The injury eventually forced her to spend a year away from professional wrestling, but the period also provided an opportunity to reassess her relationship with the sport.

“It helped me come back with a better mentality for wrestling than I had before, just more mellowed out and with a better understanding of what is worth getting upset over,” she said.

Hayter is now back on home soil for a major run of appearances, including shows at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro and AEW’s All In event at Wembley Stadium.

Her return represents a significant moment for a wrestler who had established herself as one of the prominent figures in AEW’s women’s division before her injury interrupted her momentum.

Hayter has also spoken openly about another part of her life that has influenced how she approaches wrestling: her experience of living with ADHD.

She was diagnosed with the condition around a decade ago. Although the diagnosis did not come as a complete surprise because of neurodivergence within her family, Hayter said receiving an explanation for some of the difficulties she had experienced was ultimately a relief.

“At the end of the day, it meant I can understand my brain a little better, and how I process and work with things,” she said.

Her real name is Paige Woodling, and she has described wrestling as one of the places where she is able to concentrate most effectively. The demands of performing in front of an audience provide a clear focus that can sometimes be difficult to reproduce away from the ring.

“I need to be in the zone with it,” she said.

That focus is particularly important because Hayter says life outside wrestling can sometimes become overwhelming. She has rejected the idea that neurodivergence should automatically be described as a “super power”, arguing that the condition can also be difficult and debilitating.

She said she can become overwhelmed by competing demands, appointments and everyday responsibilities.

“I’m still learning to manage it all better,” she said.

Hayter’s wrestling career began after she developed a fascination with the sport at a young age. Watching matches online, she became particularly interested in the larger-than-life personalities and physical storytelling that define professional wrestling.

One of her early inspirations was Stone Cold Steve Austin, the hugely popular anti-hero who became one of WWE’s biggest stars during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“Nothing has ever captured me like wrestling did, not movies or TV or music,” Hayter said.

She pursued the sport seriously, building a successful career on the British independent wrestling scene before competing in Japan. She also made a brief appearance on WWE’s developmental programme NXT.

Her international experience eventually helped lead her to AEW, where she joined the company in 2021 and became a regular presence in its women’s division.

She has won AEW’s women’s singles championship and established herself as one of the promotion’s better-known British wrestlers.

Earlier this year, Hayter was paired with fellow British wrestler Alex Windsor, forming the team known as the Brawling Birds. Their partnership has developed into a popular act, with the two wrestlers embracing a deliberately loud and energetic style.

Hayter said the character has similarities with their personalities away from the cameras, although the presentation is amplified for an American audience.

The pair are now involved in a major women’s tag-team storyline, giving Hayter another opportunity to compete on a large stage following her lengthy absence.

For Hayter, however, her return is about more than simply restoring a wrestling career interrupted by injury. It also represents a different approach to the pressures that come with performing at the highest level.

Her injury exposed the uncertainty of a career built around physical performance. A wrestler’s body is both an instrument and a potential source of vulnerability, and serious injuries can abruptly change plans that once seemed certain.

Hayter’s experience has therefore given her a greater appreciation of the opportunity to perform.

She also believes AEW can do more to showcase women’s wrestling. While the division has produced major matches and established stars, Hayter argues that female performers deserve greater opportunities to headline the company’s biggest events.

“Women in wrestling have proven themselves,” she said, arguing that female wrestlers can deliver strong matches, compelling promos and stories capable of attracting large audiences.

She also pointed to the persistence of misogyny within professional wrestling and the stereotypes that have historically affected women performers.

“There’s some inherent misogyny in wrestling as a whole,” she said, while arguing that the industry has a wide range of women’s wrestling styles that could be explored more fully.

Her comments come as women’s wrestling continues to expand internationally, with female performers increasingly taking prominent positions across major promotions.

Hayter’s own career reflects that evolution. She has moved from Britain’s independent scene to Japan and then to AEW, while developing a reputation based on physicality, charisma and an ability to connect with audiences.

The road back has not been straightforward. Her spinal injury forced her to confront the possibility that a career she loved could end earlier than expected. The psychological effects of being sidelined were almost as difficult as the physical pain.

But after rebuilding her strength and returning to competition, she now appears more comfortable with whatever comes next.

“I think I’m someone that just rolls with the punches,” she said. “Whatever comes next I’ll go full force with it.”

For a wrestler whose career was temporarily stopped by an injury that left her struggling to perform ordinary tasks, simply being back in front of a crowd represents a considerable achievement.

Hayter’s story is therefore not only about a professional comeback. It is also about adapting to physical setbacks, understanding mental health and neurodivergence, and finding a healthier relationship with the demands of elite sport.

Her return to Britain’s biggest wrestling stages gives her another opportunity to establish the next chapter of her career. After fearing she might never wrestle again, Hayter is once again preparing to step through the ropes.

And this time, she says, she is doing it with a different perspective.
