Brazil continued their commanding run in the World Cup qualifiers with a convincing 3-0 victory over Chile at the iconic Maracanã Stadium. Although Carlo Ancelotti’s side had already secured qualification for next year’s tournament, the win moved the five-time World champions into second place, with one match remaining.
Manchester United midfielder Casemiro had an early header disallowed for offside, but Brazil maintained clear dominance throughout the first half. The breakthrough came in the 38th minute when Chelsea teenager Estevao scored his first goal for the national team, connecting with a precise scissor kick following a saved effort from Raphinha.
Chile briefly threatened to respond in the second half, and defender Guillermo Maripan initially received a red card for a late challenge, though the decision was downgraded to yellow after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. Brazil’s control of the game remained unshaken, and the hosts doubled their lead just after the 71st minute. West Ham midfielder Paqueta, brought on as a substitute, headed home Luiz Henrique’s cross at the far post within a minute of entering the field. This goal came shortly after news that the Football Association would not appeal the decision clearing Paqueta of spot-fixing allegations.
Brazil sealed the win in the 75th minute when Newcastle midfielder Guimaraes scrambled the ball over the line after Henrique’s shot struck the underside of the crossbar, completing a dominant performance.
With this victory, Brazil sit one point ahead of Uruguay in the race for second place, though they remain ten points behind runaway leaders Argentina, who defeated Venezuela 3-0 in Buenos Aires. Brazil will face Bolivia in their final qualifier in El Alto on Tuesday, aiming to finish their campaign on a strong note.
