Wales have suffered a major setback ahead of the Six Nations, with captain Jac Morgan ruled out for at least the opening stages of the tournament following shoulder surgery. The influential flanker dislocated his shoulder while scoring a try in the November defeat to Argentina and has been sidelined since, missing subsequent matches against Japan and New Zealand. Ospreys head coach Mark Jones confirmed that Morgan faces a challenging recovery timeline, estimating four to five months before he can return to action, though he stressed that such assessments can change depending on rehabilitation progress.
Morgan, known for his leadership and relentless work rate, was one of only two Welsh players selected for the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia earlier this year, featuring in the second and third Tests. In his absence, hooker Dewi Lake has taken on captaincy duties, leading a depleted squad into this weekend’s match against South Africa.
The fixture falls outside World Rugby’s international window, meaning Wales cannot select players based outside the country, adding further strain to the squad.
Uncertainty around the Welsh domestic game has also cast doubt over Morgan’s long-term future. Reports suggest the 25-year-old is exploring potential moves to English clubs, with Saracens and Gloucester among those expressing interest. As Wales prepare for their Six Nations opener against England on 7 February at Twickenham, Morgan’s absence will be keenly felt both on and off the field, with hopes that he may still return later in the tournament depending on his recovery.
