An armed man was shot and killed early Sunday morning after breaching the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, the Florida resort and private club owned by former U.S. President Donald Trump, U.S. Secret Service officials have said. The incident took place around 1:30 a.m. local time when law enforcement agents confronted the individual after he entered the property’s security zone.
According to the Secret Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the intruder — later identified by investigators as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of North Carolina — was armed with what appeared to be a shotgun and a gas can when he was spotted at the north gate of the estate. The man had reportedly been reported missing by his family a few days earlier.
When agents and a sheriff’s deputy confronted him, authorities say he was ordered to drop the items he was carrying. After putting down the gas can, the suspect allegedly raised the shotgun toward law enforcement, at which point the officers fired their weapons, fatally wounding him. No law enforcement personnel were reported injured in the exchange.
President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were not at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the incident; they were at the White House in Washington, D.C. when the security breach occurred. Secret Service protection protocols at the estate remain stringent due to its continued importance as a private residence and social venue.
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the incident, with the FBI leading the probe alongside the Secret Service and local law enforcement. Officials are examining body-camera footage and other evidence to determine the motive and circumstances leading up to the breach. Local residents have been asked to review security camera footage in the surrounding area that could assist investigators.
The fatal encounter comes amid a series of security threats involving high-profile figures in the U.S., including earlier assassination attempts on Trump during the 2024 campaign. While detailed motives in the latest case remain unclear, officials are expected to provide more information as the investigation continues.
