At the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) in London, British and Irish acting talents stole the spotlight as Jessie Buckley and Robert Aramayo scored major wins against stiff competition from Hollywood heavyweights. The annual ceremony, held at the Royal Festival Hall and hosted by Alan Cumming, recognised outstanding achievements in film from the past year.
Irish actress Jessie Buckley was crowned Best Leading Actress for her heartfelt portrayal of Agnes Hathaway in Hamnet, a drama about grief and Shakespeare’s family life. Buckley’s performance earned wide critical praise, marking a memorable night for the acclaimed star. Hamnet also won Outstanding British Film, underlining its cultural impact.
Meanwhile, British actor Robert Aramayo delivered one of the night’s biggest surprises by winning Best Leading Actor for his role in I Swear, a biographical drama about John Davidson, a real-life campaigner for Tourette’s syndrome. Aramayo’s emotional victory was even more remarkable because he also received the EE Rising Star Award, making him one of the standout new talents of the ceremony.
Aramayo beat out high-profile nominees including Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio, underscoring his rising influence in global cinema. Buckley dedicated her award to her craft and to the power of storytelling, celebrating women’s voices in film as she accepted her accolade.
The night also saw One Battle After Another dominate with six trophies, including Best Film, Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, and Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, while titles such as Sinners, Zootropolis 2 and Mr Nobody Against Putin garnered awards across various categories.
The 2026 BAFTAs highlighted both established and emerging talent in cinema, setting the stage for the upcoming Academy Awards season with a mix of expected favourites and breakout wins.
