A devastating bus crash in Nepal has claimed the lives of at least 19 people, including a British national, and left another 25 injured, police and rescue officials have confirmed. The fatal accident occurred early on Monday morning when a crowded passenger bus veered off a mountain highway and plunged down a steep slope in the Dhading district, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety on Nepal’s mountainous routes.
The bus — travelling from the popular tourist city of Pokhara to the Nepalese capital Kathmandu — went off the Prithvi Highway shortly after midnight, rolling down the slope and landing on the banks of the Trishuli River near Benighat, around 80 km (50 miles) west of Kathmandu.
Among the confirmed fatalities was a 24‑year‑old British national, local police said, with authorities identifying only some of the deceased as recovery operations continued into the day.
Police reported that there were about 44 people on board at the time of the crash, a mix of domestic passengers and international travellers. The wounded — including citizens from China, New Zealand and other countries — were rushed to hospitals in Kathmandu for urgent treatment.
Public safety officials and local rescue teams, including the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police, responded to the scene in difficult overnight conditions. Survivors were pulled from the wreckage as emergency crews battled darkness and steep terrain to reach injured passengers.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, but early indications suggest that treacherous mountainous terrain, poorly maintained roads and challenging weather conditions may have played a part in the vehicle losing control. Bus accidents are unfortunately frequent in Nepal due to narrow, winding routes and variable road conditions in the Himalayan region.
This tragic incident comes amid broader concerns about transportation safety in mountainous nations, where each year dozens of fatal bus crashes are recorded along remote highways. Officials have reiterated calls for improved road safety standards and stricter vehicle maintenance regulations to help prevent similar disasters in the future.
