The Green Party has achieved a historic victory in the Gorton and Denton by-election, overturning a longstanding Labour majority and claiming the party’s first ever Westminster by-election win. The result represents a significant shift in British politics and a blow to the ruling Labour Party led by Sir Keir Starmer.

The by-election, held on 26 February 2026, was triggered by the resignation of former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne on health grounds. Green Party candidate Hannah Spencer won the seat with 14,980 votes, securing a lead of 4,402 over her nearest rival. The Reform UK candidate, Matt Goodwin, finished second with 10,578 votes, while Labour’s Angeliki Stogia trailed in third with 9,364 — a substantial decline from Labour’s majority in the 2024 general election.

The constituency, part of Greater Manchester, had been a Labour stronghold for decades. Labour’s loss, coupled with the Greens’ breakthrough, highlights voter realignment and dissatisfaction with traditional party politics in some urban areas. The result also places Zack Polanski’s Green Party of England and Wales on the parliamentary map in a new way, marking the first time the party has won a Commons seat via a by-election.

Analysts noted that the campaign focused on local issues and broader national concerns, including reactions to government policies. The Greens’ success is seen by some commentators as evidence of the party’s growing appeal beyond its traditional base, especially among voters seeking alternatives to both Labour and Reform UK. The outcome is likely to intensify internal discussions within Labour about strategic direction and candidate selection.

The by-election turnout was 47.6 per cent, similar to levels seen in the previous general election, underscoring sustained voter engagement in the contest. Observers described the Greens’ win as a “seismic moment” in UK politics, underscoring the party’s emergence as a credible parliamentary force and a sign of evolving political dynamics ahead of future national elections.
