The grave of two‑year‑old James Bulger, one of the United Kingdom’s most infamous child murder victims, was vandalised on Thursday, prompting an appeal from his grieving mother for information that could lead to the perpetrators’ arrest. The damage was discovered at Kirkdale Cemetery in Liverpool, where James is buried, after a dog walker reported the scene to the boy’s family.
James was abducted and murdered in February 1993 by two ten‑year‑old boys — Jon Venables and Robert Thompson — in a crime that shocked the nation and has remained etched in public memory for more than three decades. His mother, Denise Fergus, said she felt her “heart break once again” upon learning that cherub statues flanking the headstone had been smashed and were left headless at the site.
In a social media appeal, Fergus urged anyone with information about the vandalism, believed to have occurred between 10 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. on 26 February, to contact Merseyside Police or the James Bulger Memorial Trust. She described the act as “cruel and hurtful” and called for the people responsible to be found and prosecuted.
Photos shared by family members show the damaged statues lying broken at the foot of the headstone, which also bears James’s name and a photograph. Cemetery visitors and members of the public have expressed shock and anger, with many condemning the attack as a disrespectful act against the memory of a child.
Merseyside Police confirmed they are investigating the vandalism and appealing for witnesses or CCTV footage from the surrounding area to help identify those responsible. They asked anyone who was near Kirkdale Cemetery around the time of the incident to come forward.
The vandalism comes amid ongoing public attention on the Bulger case, including debates over parole reviews for one of his killers, and reignites painful memories for many across the UK. Fergus, who runs a charity in her son’s memory aimed at supporting families affected by crime, reiterated that she wants the focus to remain on child safety and justice reform even as she seeks answers to the latest distressing incident.
