In one of the most surprising turns of the 2026 awards season, Michael B. Jordan and the vampire drama Sinners delivered a major upset at the Actor Awards, shaking up predictions for next month’s Academy Awards. The film, directed by Ryan Coogler, took home the top honours at Sunday’s ceremony — including Best Ensemble Cast and Best Male Actor — boosting its momentum ahead of the Oscars and challenging traditional frontrunners.

Jordan’s win for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role came against a stacked field of nominees, including Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio. His portrayal of twin brothers battling supernatural and social forces in Sinners has already earned acclaim across the season and further cemented his status as a major contender in the Best Actor category at the Oscars. Sinners also claimed the Best Ensemble award, marking a rare double victory that elevates its profile among voters.

The success of Sinners at the Actor Awards — widely seen as a bellwether for Academy tastes — has injected fresh unpredictability into the Oscar race. The film already leads all contenders with 16 Academy Award nominations, a record number this year, including nods for Best Picture and Best Actor. That breadth of recognition, combined with its recent awards, may persuade some Academy members to revisit their ballots as the March 15 Oscars draw closer.

Industry observers had long pegged One Battle After Another as the likely Oscars favourite, buoyed by wins at other major precursor events. But Sinners’ strong showing at Sunday’s ceremony, and Jordan’s victory in particular, could alter voting dynamics by redirecting attention and awards‑season momentum. Analysts say the ensemble win is especially significant, since collective honours often correlate with Best Picture strength at the Oscars.

Jessie Buckley also enjoyed a standout night, winning Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her work in Hamnet, another Oscar nominee. Other major wins included Sean Penn for Best Supporting Actor and Amy Madigan for Best Supporting Actress, highlighting a diverse set of performances shaping the 2026 awards narrative.

The Actor Awards, the latest iteration of the Screen Actors Guild tradition, are voted on by industry peers, making them a respected indicator of broader Academy sentiment. With under two weeks to go until the Oscars, Jordan’s triumph — and Sinners’ ensemble success — ensures that this year’s race remains open, competitive and unpredictable.
