The Afghanistan Pakistan conflict has intensified after Kabul claimed it thwarted attempted Pakistani airstrikes on Bagram airbase. The former United States military hub, located north of Kabul, has once again become a symbol of rising regional tension. Afghan officials said their forces repelled incoming jets early Sunday morning, marking a dramatic escalation in cross-border hostilities.

According to authorities in Parwan province, several Pakistani military aircraft entered Afghan airspace around 5am. Officials alleged the jets attempted to bomb Bagram airbase, a site that once hosted thousands of foreign troops. The provincial police headquarters stated that Afghan air defence systems were activated immediately. They claimed anti-aircraft fire and missile systems successfully forced the aircraft to retreat.

Islamabad has not issued an immediate response to the allegation. The absence of confirmation has added uncertainty to an already volatile situation. Independent verification of the claim remains difficult amid restricted access and conflicting narratives.

The Afghanistan Pakistan conflict has now stretched into its fourth consecutive day of intense fighting. Clashes first reignited on Thursday when Afghan forces reportedly launched attacks along the frontier. Pakistani troops responded swiftly with artillery strikes and aerial operations across border regions.

Pakistan has since declared it is in “open war” with Afghanistan, signalling a dramatic shift in tone. Observers say such language underscores the seriousness of the confrontation. Previous flare-ups were often limited to border skirmishes or targeted strikes.

On Friday, Pakistan acknowledged carrying out airstrikes in major Afghan cities, including Kabul and Kandahar. Kandahar holds particular political importance as the power base of the Taliban leadership. Analysts describe the move as a significant departure from earlier operations that targeted alleged militant hideouts.

This week marks the first time Pakistan has openly focused air power on Afghan government-linked facilities. That shift has fuelled fears of a broader military confrontation. Regional experts warn that miscalculations could quickly spiral into sustained conflict.

Afghanistan’s deputy government spokesperson, Hamdullah Fitrat, accused Pakistan of causing heavy civilian casualties. He said 36 civilians had been killed across several provinces since Thursday. Islamabad has not publicly commented on those specific casualty figures.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, presented a sharply different account. He claimed that 46 locations inside Afghanistan had been struck since operations began. Tarar stated that 415 Afghan soldiers were killed in the strikes. Pakistani authorities earlier confirmed that 12 of their own soldiers had died.

Afghan officials disputed those figures and offered alternative numbers. Fitrat claimed more than 80 Pakistani soldiers were killed during retaliatory operations. He also alleged that Afghan forces had captured 27 Pakistani military posts along the border. Kabul earlier acknowledged losing 13 soldiers in the fighting.

Casualty claims from both sides remain impossible to verify independently. Communication restrictions and limited media access complicate confirmation efforts. International observers caution that figures released during wartime often reflect strategic messaging.

The Afghanistan Pakistan conflict is unfolding in areas already plagued by insecurity. Regions near the border have long been affected by militant activity. Armed groups exploit difficult terrain and porous boundaries to operate across both countries.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused Afghanistan’s Taliban-led administration of failing to curb militant groups. Islamabad alleges that fighters use Afghan soil to launch attacks inside Pakistan. Afghan authorities strongly reject those accusations, insisting they do not shelter anti-Pakistan militants.

Many recent attacks in Pakistan have been claimed by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. The group, often abbreviated as TTP, has intensified operations since 2021. That year marked the Taliban’s return to power in Kabul after foreign troop withdrawal.

The Afghan government denies providing support to TTP fighters. However, mistrust between the two neighbours has deepened steadily. Each side accuses the other of failing to control armed actors operating near the frontier.

Residents in Khost and Nangarhar provinces reported sporadic clashes on Sunday afternoon. Witnesses described intermittent gunfire and explosions echoing through border districts. Many families have fled villages fearing further escalation.

The Torkham border crossing has also seen overnight fighting. This key transit point connects eastern Afghanistan with Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It serves as a major gateway for trade and for Afghans returning from Pakistan.

Local officials in Nangarhar confirmed exchanges of fire near Torkham. Transport movement slowed significantly as security forces reinforced checkpoints. Aid groups warned that prolonged disruption could affect food and medical supplies.

In Kabul, security presence increased noticeably on Sunday. Additional checkpoints appeared across the city centre. Residents described a tense atmosphere as rumours spread through neighbourhoods.

The Afghanistan Pakistan conflict has alarmed the wider international community. Diplomatic efforts to broker a truce have so far failed. Regional powers including Saudi Arabia and Qatar have reportedly engaged both sides.

Global concern centres on the risk of militant groups exploiting instability. Organisations such as al-Qaida and Islamic State maintain limited but persistent footprints in parts of Afghanistan. Analysts warn that escalating state conflict could create space for their resurgence.

The strategic importance of Bagram airbase adds symbolic weight to the dispute. Once the largest US military installation in Afghanistan, it became synonymous with the international war effort. Its involvement in current hostilities underscores how quickly old battlegrounds can regain relevance.

Military analysts note that targeting government-linked sites marks a new phase in the Afghanistan Pakistan conflict. Previously, Pakistan framed cross-border airstrikes as counterterrorism measures. Direct engagement with Afghan state infrastructure risks deeper diplomatic rupture.

For civilians living near the frontier, daily life has become increasingly uncertain. Schools in some districts have closed temporarily. Local markets operate under tight security and shortened hours.

Humanitarian organisations have urged restraint from both governments. They stress the urgent need to protect civilians and critical infrastructure. Calls for de-escalation have echoed from regional capitals and beyond.

The broader geopolitical context further complicates mediation efforts. Both countries face internal political pressures and economic challenges. Leaders on each side may feel compelled to adopt firm public positions.

Despite the strong rhetoric, channels of communication reportedly remain open. Diplomats familiar with the region suggest backdoor talks continue quietly. Whether those efforts can halt the Afghanistan Pakistan conflict remains uncertain.

As fighting persists, the risk of misinterpretation grows. Military movements near sensitive sites can easily trigger wider confrontation. Experts urge both governments to prioritise verification and transparency.

The coming days may prove decisive in shaping the trajectory of this crisis. A sustained escalation could destabilise an already fragile region. Conversely, renewed dialogue might prevent further bloodshed.

For now, conflicting claims about Bagram airbase illustrate the fog of war. Each narrative reflects broader mistrust defining the Afghanistan Pakistan conflict. The human cost, however, remains the most pressing and tragic reality.
