Singer and television presenter Jane McDonald has opened up about her approach to health, her favourite travel destinations and her personal decision not to have children, in a wide‑ranging interview that reveals a more candid side to the much‑loved personality.

McDonald, who rose to fame with her debut album in the 1990s and later became known for her travel documentaries, described her current fitness routine as “lazy” by conventional standards — but effective for her lifestyle. She explained that rather than strict gym sessions or intense workouts, she focuses on walking, light exercise and staying active while on the move. “I’m not someone who goes to the gym every day,” she said. “I like to keep it simple, do what feels good and fit it around my work and travel.”

Travel remains one of McDonald’s greatest passions, both professionally and personally. Throughout her television career she has visited dozens of countries, profiling cities, landscapes and cultural experiences for viewers at home. In the interview she highlighted several favourite destinations, including the sun‑soaked islands of the Mediterranean and historic cities in Europe that combine history with vibrant local life. She also spoke warmly of recent trips to Japan and New Zealand, where she enjoyed both the scenery and the hospitality of local people.

McDonald’s travel philosophy emphasises immersive experiences rather than ticking off sightseeing checklists. She explained that her preference is destinations where she can relax, explore at her own pace and connect with local culture and cuisine. “It’s about quality time and memories,” she said. “Whether it’s a walk along a coastal path or a market in an ancient city, those are the moments that stay with you.”

On the subject of family, McDonald addressed the fact that she has never had children — a topic that has often intrigued fans and media alike. She described her decision as personal and made with careful reflection, saying that her career, lifestyle and priorities simply did not align with parenthood. McDonald emphasised that her life has been full in its own way, shaped by work, travel and close relationships with friends and family. She discouraged judgement of others’ life choices, stressing that fulfilment can take many forms.

The broadcaster also reflected on her career longevity and the connection she feels with audiences. Known for her warm presence and relatable charm, she said authenticity has always been central to her work. “I try to be honest with people — about what I do and who I am,” she said. “If that resonates with someone and makes them smile or inspires them to try something new, that’s wonderful.”

McDonald’s relaxed take on fitness has resonated with many fans who say they find her approach encouraging. Rather than promoting rigid routines or unrealistic goals, she advocates for movement that fits into daily life — walking, dancing, enjoying activities that bring pleasure while boosting wellbeing.

Her travel recommendations also offer inspiration for those planning breaks this year. From the beach resorts of Southern Europe to the cultural depth of Asian cities, McDonald’s highlights reflect a balance between leisure and adventure. She also spoke about the benefits of solo travel and how exploring the world independently has enriched her perspective.

On the question of family and personal expectations, McDonald said: “Everyone’s path is different. For me, life has been full and joyful in ways that suit me. I’ve had wonderful experiences and strong connections, and that’s enough.”

The interview underlines McDonald’s belief that wellbeing, travel and life fulfilment are deeply personal choices. Her candid comments about her fitness routine, favourite destinations and life decisions illustrate a mindset focused on balance, enjoyment and authenticity — qualities that have defined her career and sustained her popularity across generations.
