New York City is in mourning following a “senseless and horrifying” shooting that claimed the life of a 7-month-old girl on Wednesday afternoon, 1 April 2026. The infant, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was sitting in her stroller on a busy Brooklyn sidewalk when she was struck by a stray bullet. The NYPD has characterized the incident as a gang-motivated attack in which the child was a tragic, unintended victim.
The shooting occurred at approximately 1:20 PM at the intersection of Humboldt and Moore Streets in East Williamsburg.
-
The Moped Ambush: Surveillance footage captured two males on a moped driving against traffic. As they approached the corner, the rear passenger pulled out a firearm and discharged at least two rounds toward a group of adults and children.
-
The Victims: Kaori was struck in the torso and later pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital. Her 2-year-old brother, who was in the same stroller, suffered a graze wound but is expected to physically recover.
-
The Escape and Crash: Following the shooting, the suspects fled the scene but collided with an oncoming car just two blocks away. Both were thrown from the moped; the driver managed to flee on foot, while the passenger was injured.
On Thursday, 2 April, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced that the suspected gunman had been identified and was under police guard in a hospital bed.
-
The Suspect: Amare Green, 21, is facing charges of Murder and two counts of Attempted Murder. Green is reportedly a known associate of a street gang operating out of a nearby public housing project.
-
The Target: Investigators believe the intended target may have been the baby’s father, who was standing nearby, as part of an ongoing dispute between rival gangs.
-
The Manhunt: Police have identified the driver of the moped but have not yet released his name. He remains at large as of Friday afternoon.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined Commissioner Tisch at the scene, describing the day as a “devastating reminder” of the persistent threat of gun violence. “A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant,” Mamdani said. “There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling right now.“
In a display of profound grace, the baby’s grandmother, Linda Oyinkoinyan—a local pastor—told reporters that she and her husband forgive those involved despite their “unbearable” grief. Meanwhile, Kaori’s mother, Lianna Charles-Moore, spoke through tears of the void left behind: “I can’t get her back. She’s gone, and I can’t ever see her again.“
The tragedy has struck a particularly sour note for city officials, coming just as the NYPD touted record-low crime figures. In the first quarter of 2026, the city experienced its fewest murders and shooting incidents since statistics were first recorded. However, as Commissioner Tisch noted, “Statistics mean nothing to a mother who has lost her child.” The city has pledged a surge in police presence in the Williamsburg and Bushwick areas to prevent retaliatory violence and assist in the apprehension of the second suspect.
