A deadly and unusual maritime incident off the northern coast of Cuba has resulted in the death of an American citizen, U.S. officials confirmed, intensifying strain between Havana and Washington. The confrontation occurred on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, when Cuban coast guard forces exchanged gunfire with occupants of a Florida-registered speedboat, killing four people and injuring six others.
According to Cuban authorities, the 24-foot vessel crossed into Cuban territorial waters near Cayo Falcones in Villa Clara province and was intercepted by a Cuban patrol. Officials from Cuba’s Interior Ministry said the boat’s passengers opened fire on their forces, hitting the Cuban patrol commander. Cuban troops then returned fire, killing four aboard and wounding six, one of whom was a Cuban official.
U.S. sources confirm at least one of the four people killed was a U.S. citizen and that another American on board was wounded and is receiving medical care in Cuba, according to information provided to news outlets by officials familiar with the incident. At least one other person aboard had entered the United States on a visa, and others may be lawful permanent residents, the official said, though identities have not been publicly released.
Reports indicate the boat was reported stolen in the Florida Keys shortly before the confrontation. The vessel’s Florida owner told local authorities he had not given permission for its use and believed an employee had taken it without consent.
The Cuban government described the occupants as armed and accused them of attempting an “infiltration” or violent incursion. Cuban officials said they seized weapons, camouflage gear, night vision equipment, and explosives aboard the vessel, asserting the group posed a security threat. Havana has identified several of the passengers, including one of the deceased, and alleges some were wanted by Cuban authorities for prior alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States will conduct its own investigation into the incident, emphasizing that the government is collecting independent information about how events unfolded. Rubio described the shootout as “highly unusual” and stated that U.S. authorities are seeking clarity on what happened.
The episode comes amid already fraught U.S.-Cuba relations, with tensions heightened by recent U.S. sanctions and broader geopolitical friction. Cuban officials have said they are in communication with U.S. counterparts to exchange information about the incident, including details on the individuals involved and the circumstances of the encounter.
With investigations ongoing on both sides, questions remain about the motives for the voyage, the intent of the passengers, and whether any warnings were issued before Cuban forces opened fire. The incident evokes concerns about maritime security, national sovereignty, and diplomatic cooperation as both governments work to establish facts and address fallout from the deadly shooting.
