The United States has successfully rescued the missing crew member of a U.S. F-15 fighter jet that was shot down on Friday over southern Iran.
US President Donald Trump confirmed the rescue on social media early Sunday, describing the operation as “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations” in U.S. history. He added that the officer is “now SAFE and SOUND.”
The F-15 jet carried two crew members, both of whom ejected after the aircraft was downed. One crew member had been rescued by U.S. forces earlier, while the second, a weapons systems officer, was recovered in a complex and high-risk mission inside Iran. Iranian officials confirmed that the jet was shot down by the country’s air defence system.
The exact details of the rescue remain unclear, though sources familiar with the operation described it as a “huge” combat search and rescue mission. The BBC reports that there was engagement between U.S. and Iranian forces during the extraction, and the airman may have sustained injuries during his ejection.
Combat search and rescue (CSAR) operations are among the most complex and time-sensitive military missions. Specialized air force units are trained to carry out these missions, often involving helicopters flying low over hostile territory, accompanied by supporting aircraft that patrol and provide air cover.
President Trump stated that the colonel was “behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran, being hunted down by our enemies, who were getting closer and closer by the hour.” He added that senior U.S. officials monitored the airman’s location around the clock while planning the rescue operation. Dozens of U.S. aircraft participated in the mission, and Trump emphasized that the operation was carried out without any American casualties.
Iranian state media reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shot down a U.S. drone searching for the missing airman. The drone reportedly crashed in southern Isfahan province. Earlier, Iran had expressed a desire to locate the missing airman alive and had offered a reward to citizens who assisted in the search.
Crew members of downed aircraft are trained to survive in hostile environments and avoid capture. According to Jennifer Kavanagh, director of military analysis at the think tank Defense Priorities, their primary priority is to stay alive, conceal themselves, and use survival techniques to sustain themselves without immediate access to food or water.
The F-15 was reportedly shot down in one of two southern provinces, either Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad or Khuzestan. The initial rescue of the pilot involved an A-10 Warthog aircraft, which itself was hit over the Gulf, forcing its pilot to eject before being rescued. During the later extraction of the second airman, one helicopter was struck by small arms fire, injuring crew members, though it landed safely.
The IRGC also claimed that local nomadic tribes in the mountainous region fired on U.S. Black Hawk helicopters involved in the mission. Videos verified by BBC show armed individuals firing toward at least two helicopters. Iran credited new air defence systems with downing both U.S. aircraft.
The Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province is a mountainous region with over 700,000 residents, including nomads who carry rifles to protect livestock. Khuzestan, home to over 4.7 million people, is a hub for oil and industry and features a diverse population including Arabs, Persians, and Lors.
The F-15E Strike Eagle is designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. In this operation, the aircraft was likely involved in defensive roles, protecting U.S. forces by intercepting Iranian drones and cruise missiles. The F-15E carries a pilot and a weapons systems officer, or “Wizzo,” who manages targeting and weapons programming.
This operation underscores the complexity of modern air combat and the lengths to which the U.S. military will go to recover personnel from hostile environments. The rescued airman is now safe and expected to recover from his injuries.
