England’s hopes of reaching another Women’s World Cup final were crushed in Guwahati, where South Africa produced a dominant all-round display to claim a stunning 125-run victory and book their first-ever spot in the tournament’s grand finale.
It was a night to remember for South African captain Laura Wolvaardt, who played one of the greatest one-day innings in World Cup history. Her magnificent 169 off 143 balls was a masterclass in timing, placement and composure. Leading from the front, she guided her side to a formidable total of 319 for 7 in 50 overs — a score that ultimately proved far beyond England’s reach.
England’s chase began in disarray. The top order collapsed in shocking fashion as they found themselves three wickets down for just one run. Amy Jones and captain Heather Knight were both bowled by an inspired Marizanne Kapp, while Tammy Beaumont edged behind off Ayabonga Khaka. From the very start, the match seemed to be slipping away.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Alice Capsey fought back bravely, building a partnership of 105 that briefly revived English hopes. Capsey looked mature beyond her years as she reached her maiden ODI fifty, while Sciver-Brunt, the team’s most reliable performer, played with typical determination. Yet the mounting pressure of an escalating required rate told on both. Capsey’s dismissal triggered another slide, and Kapp, relentless and precise, dismissed Sciver-Brunt for 64 to all but end the contest.
Kapp went on to claim a career-best 5 for 20, removing Sophia Dunkley and Charlie Dean in quick succession to wrap up England’s innings at 194 all out in 42.3 overs. It was a fitting reward for her energy and aggression, which had earlier set the tone in South Africa’s fiery opening spell with the new ball.
Despite their disappointing batting performance, England’s bowlers and fielders had few complaints about their own display. Sophie Ecclestone, carrying a shoulder injury, bowled admirably to take 4 for 44, including two wickets in a single over that temporarily halted South Africa’s early surge. From 116 for no loss, the Proteas slipped to 119 for 3, offering a glimmer of hope.
But Wolvaardt’s composure never faltered. She rebuilt steadily, first alongside Marizanne Kapp, who struck a valuable 42, and then with Chloe Tryon, who added an unbeaten 33 in the closing overs. The final 10 overs yielded a remarkable 117 runs, as Wolvaardt shifted gears effortlessly, punishing anything loose with power and precision. Her acceleration was breathtaking, transforming South Africa’s innings from solid to sensational.
By the time Wolvaardt departed in the final over, she had already written her name into the record books — not just as the highest scorer in a Women’s World Cup semi-final, but as the heartbeat of a South African team that has steadily grown in belief and confidence throughout the tournament.
For England, it was a sobering end to their campaign. Their previous two World Cup semi-final wins over South Africa counted for little as their batting imploded under pressure. Sciver-Brunt’s lone resistance highlighted how dependent the team has become on a few key players, while the absence of early partnerships proved fatal.
South Africa’s comprehensive victory was built on character and skill in equal measure. Wolvaardt’s brilliance at the top, Kapp’s ferocity with both bat and ball, and the team’s discipline in the field combined to deliver one of their most complete performances on the world stage.
They now await the winner of Thursday’s semi-final between India and Australia in Navi Mumbai. Whoever they face, South Africa will enter Sunday’s final with immense confidence and the momentum of history behind them. For the first time, the Proteas women stand on the brink of global glory — powered by one of the finest innings ever played in the history of the Women’s World Cup.
