Barcelona delivered a masterclass in attacking football as they dismantled Valencia 6-0 in their opening home game of the La Liga season at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. A modest crowd of around 6,000 witnessed a dominating performance from the defending champions, who looked every bit as formidable as last season’s treble winners. The first half saw Barcelona controlling possession and testing Valencia’s defense, though the finishing was initially lacking.
Fermín López, Ferran Torres, and Marcus Rashford combined fluidly, moving intelligently off the ball and creating numerous chances. Roony Bardghji impressed on his debut with direct and assertive play from the wing, while Pedri and Marc Casadó ensured smooth transitions through the midfield. Defensively, Barcelona’s press stifled Valencia, leaving their visitors without a single shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes. The lead finally came through Fermín López, who finished a well-constructed move after a brilliant assist from Ferran Torres.
The second half saw the floodgates open. Raphinha, brought on at halftime, quickly added to the tally after a precise low cross from Rashford. Minutes later, Fermín López scored a sensational long-range goal, extending Barcelona’s lead to three. Raphinha struck again after a defensive error by José Gayà, followed by Dani Olmo setting up Robert Lewandowski for his first goal of the season. Lewandowski completed his brace with a delicate chip from a Marc Bernal assist, after a VAR review confirmed the goal.
Barcelona’s dominance was evident in every department, from relentless attacking to compact pressing. Hansi Flick’s team displayed cohesion, creativity, and ruthlessness, leaving Valencia overwhelmed and struggling to create any meaningful opportunities. The result propelled Barcelona to second place in the La Liga table and sent a strong message that the champions are in formidable form. With a trip to St. James’ Park looming next, Barcelona look well-prepared to continue their title defense in style.
