Mikel Arteta could not hide his frustration as Arsenal were held to a 2–2 draw by Sunderland after a dramatic 94th-minute equaliser at the Stadium of Light. Substitute Brian Brobbey’s late strike rescued a point for the home side, leaving Arsenal to reflect on missed chances and a lapse in concentration that proved costly.
“It’s not a nice feeling,” Arteta admitted after the match. “It’s disappointment and frustration, because we wanted the three points. We knew it was going to be a tough game. Sunderland were very disruptive, and we had to manage difficult situations. But we should have done better in key moments.”
The game began with an unexpected twist as former Arsenal academy graduate Dan Ballard opened the scoring for Sunderland midway through the first half. The goal ended Arsenal’s club-record run of eight consecutive clean sheets, something Arteta admitted pained him deeply. “A pain in my tummy,” he said with a wry smile, “because I don’t want to concede any goals.”
Arsenal, however, responded strongly after the break. Bukayo Saka brought them level with a neat finish after a fluid team move, before Leandro Trossard put the visitors ahead with a smartly taken goal. For a time, Arsenal appeared in complete control, dictating possession and pressing Sunderland deep into their own half.
But as the clock ticked down, the tension grew. Sunderland’s manager, Régis Le Bris, threw on attacking options, urging his players forward. The home crowd, buoyed by recent performances, roared their team on. Arsenal, who had defended so solidly for weeks, began to look vulnerable under the aerial bombardment.
When Brobbey pounced in the 94th minute to sweep home from close range, the stadium erupted. Arsenal players sank to their knees, stunned. Arteta, who had been gesturing furiously from the touchline moments earlier, stood motionless, staring in disbelief as two points slipped away.
“We conceded a goal that was not at our level,” the Arsenal boss reflected. “But the team reacted really well after that, showed a lot of personality and courage. We scored two good goals and dominated the game. When you lead away from home, you have to manage the final moments better. We didn’t defend the box the way we should have.”
Even after Sunderland’s equaliser, Arsenal had one final chance to snatch victory when Mikel Merino’s low shot was blocked heroically by Ballard. “In the last minute, we had another massive chance to win,” said Arteta. “I think we deserved to take the three points.”
For Sunderland, the draw felt like a victory. Their manager Le Bris was full of praise for his team’s resilience and spirit. “It shows the team has a really strong character,” he said. “It’s still very tough against a team like Arsenal, one of the best in Europe. You have to deliver a masterclass, otherwise it’s impossible to take something.”
Le Bris reflected on the tactical approach that nearly paid off. “The first half was well balanced. We tried to defend high when possible, and when not, we stayed compact, narrow, and aggressive. We even managed to control the ball at times, which is important against a side that presses like Arsenal.”
He acknowledged that the second half tested his young squad’s endurance. “It was tougher after the break because we had to defend for long periods. We’re still a young team without much Premier League experience. But this is a good lesson. After Arsenal’s second goal, we were on the edge, but the energy from the stadium and the belief within the team kept us going.”
Sunderland’s dramatic equaliser continues their impressive home record, keeping them firmly in the top four after a string of strong performances since returning to the Premier League. Le Bris credited his players’ belief and the bond with supporters: “This stadium gives us energy. The belief that we can change the dynamic of a game — that’s something really special here.”
For Arsenal, the draw is another reminder of the fine margins that define title challenges. Arteta’s side dominated possession, created chances, but failed to finish the job — a familiar frustration in recent seasons. Still, the manager remained defiant. “We’ll take the positives,” he said. “We came back from a goal down, showed character, but we must close games better. That’s what great teams do, and that’s what we want to be.”
As Arsenal look ahead to a crucial run of fixtures, Arteta will demand a sharper edge and more composure in closing moments. For Sunderland, this result feels like another statement of intent — proof that their place among England’s elite is no fluke.
