Akon, the Grammy-nominated singer known for hits like “Locked Up” and “Smack That,” was arrested last week in DeKalb County, Georgia, over an outstanding warrant. The 52-year-old artist, whose real name is Aliaune Thiam, was taken into custody by the Chamblee Police Department on Friday morning and released six hours later. His mugshot shows him wearing a black hoodie with a calm expression.
Authorities said the arrest followed a notification from Flock security cameras, which identified a car registered to someone with an out-of-county warrant at Tint World, an auto styling center. According to the arrest report, Akon remained cooperative and aware of the warrant at the time of the arrest.
The warrant originates from Roswell, Georgia, after an incident in September in which police discovered Akon driving a Tesla Cybertruck with a dead battery and found his license was suspended due to a failure to appear in January 2023. Officers also cited him for possession of an illegal vape and confiscated the device.
Akon’s spokesperson said the arrest resulted from a clerical error. “The suspended license should have never been escalated; it was paid but not properly entered into the system. This will be soon rectified in the courts in early December,” the statement added.
The singer is currently on tour in India and has continued posting on social media, sharing a video captioned, “It’s a beautiful day.”
Akon rose to fame in the early 2000s and has maintained a high-profile career while occasionally courting controversy with claims about his past. He has previously been arrested six times but was only convicted of one felony for gun possession in New Jersey in 1998, serving three years of probation.
Recently, Akon has faced personal challenges, including a divorce filed by his wife Tomeka Thiam after 28 years of marriage. The singer is seeking joint legal custody and sole physical custody of their 17-year-old daughter, as well as spousal support.
