Kylian Mbappe delivered a sensational performance as Real Madrid defeated Athletic Club 3-0 in Bilbao, cutting Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga to just one point. The French forward scored in each half, either side of Eduardo Camavinga’s header, ensuring Los Blancos tightened the title race after three consecutive draws and a heavy defeat against Liverpool had threatened their campaign.
Mbappe opened the scoring early with a clinical finish from a Trent Alexander-Arnold assist. Camavinga doubled the lead before halftime, nodding in a cross from Mbappe, and the French superstar sealed the victory in the second half with his 16th league goal of the season. Despite the triumph, Real Madrid suffered potential injury blows as Alexander-Arnold and Camavinga were both substituted.
Athletic Club had few clear chances, with Thibaut Courtois producing key saves, including a one-on-one stop against Alex Berenguer. Real Madrid dominated possession and showcased one of their best displays of the season under Xavi Alonso, who received praise from Vinicius during substitutions despite prior tensions.
The win reinforces Real Madrid’s position as serious contenders for the La Liga title and intensifies the battle with Barcelona, who had temporarily moved four points clear following their victory over Atletico Madrid. Mbappe’s brilliance and Real’s cohesive display in Bilbao highlight the team’s resurgence at a crucial stage in the season.
