Abigail Spanberger, the newly inaugurated governor of Virginia, has been selected to deliver the Democratic Party’s response to President Donald Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address, a high-profile platform intended to counter the president’s message to the nation. Spanberger’s nomination reflects her rising national profile and the Democratic leadership’s emphasis on practical issues like affordability and economic security ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
Spanberger, 46, became Virginia’s first female governor in January after winning the 2025 election by a double-digit margin in a state that has increasingly become politically competitive. Prior to her gubernatorial victory, she served three terms in the US House of Representatives, where she represented Virginia’s 7th Congressional District — a seat she flipped from Republican control in 2018.
Before entering elective office, Spanberger held roles in federal law enforcement and intelligence. Her early career included work with the United States Postal Inspection Service on narcotics and money-laundering cases and a period as an operations officer for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). This blend of national security and public service experience has shaped her political image as a moderate and pragmatic Democrat who appeals to swing voters while addressing core policy concerns.
During her time in Congress, Spanberger was known for bipartisan collaboration and independent stances on key issues. She has publicly advocated for measures to prevent opioid overdoses, support veterans, and address public safety concerns, and has at times critiqued her own party’s messaging strategy.
Her 2025 gubernatorial campaign focused intensely on economic issues, including lowering costs for families and protecting jobs as federal policies shift under the Trump administration. As governor, she has continued to emphasize affordability, housing, healthcare access, and public safety — themes she is expected to amplify in her Democratic response to the State of the Union.
National Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, praised Spanberger’s record and message when announcing her selection. They highlighted her leadership on everyday economic challenges and her role in presenting a contrasting vision to that of President Trump.
Spanberger’s response will be delivered from Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, immediately following the president’s speech, offering a televised opportunity to reach a nationwide audience and articulate the Democratic Party’s priorities as the 2026 midterm elections approach.
